Our story

Our home may have been built by Jimmy Russell, known by many as “the master distiller’s master distiller,” a legend of bourbon. But the devotion and artistry for fine bourbon runs in the Russell family, and it was Jimmy’s son, Master Distiller Eddie Russell, who spread his wings, to create Russell’s Reserve® as a tribute to his father’s legacy. For decades, Eddie learned everything Jimmy had to teach: every tradition, every technique, every touch of craft. Having mastered the art, but filled with his own original ideas, Russell’s Reserve is Eddie’s own way of crafting bourbon that embodies he and Jimmy’s shared passion

Master Distiller Jimmy Russell was trained by the greats and inspired the next generation, passing down his time-honored secrets and bourbon contributions to his son, Eddie. Together, they make Russell’s Reserve as one of the only father-and-son Master Distiller teams in the industry. Eddie Russell, son of Master Distiller Jimmy Russell, is welcomed into the Wild Turkey family and begins his life-long career in the whiskey industry.

To celebrate Jimmy’s 45 years of service at the Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, Eddie crafts a special small-batch bourbon that he calls Russell’s Reserve.

Eddie earns the distinguished title of Master Distiller, following in his father’s footsteps. Today, Jimmy and Eddie stand as the longest-tenured father and son duo in the bourbon industry, with more than 100 collective years of experience. This same year, Eddie also releases Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye, a 104-proof, non-chill filtered bottle, and the first Russell’s Reserve vintage whiskey, Russell’s Reserve 1998.

Our process

[H2] Grain
Only the finest ingredients are used to make our whiskey. This includes three non-GMO grains: American-grown corn, rye, and malted barley. We have one mash bill for our bourbons and one for ryes — our mash bills are guarded closely by Jimmy and Eddie.

The water for our whiskey is sourced from the Kentucky River and is naturally filtered through limestone, removing iron and other impurities. Russell’s Reserve is distilled to a lower ABV, meaning less water is added before barreling, resulting in a robust whiskey.

Our whiskey is aged in new American oak barrels with the deepest No. 4 alligator char, giving Russell’s Reserve its rich flavor and deep auburn color. These barrels are set to rest in the middle floors of our timber rickhouses. The barrels for each batch are hand-selected by Eddie based on their flavor characteristics.

Good taste takes time. Though the legal aging requirement for Kentucky straight bourbon is two years, we wait a minimum of ten years for our Russell’s Reserve 10 Year Old Bourbon to mature and six years for our rye.

[H2] The Center Cut
When it comes to making Russell’s Reserve, we can’t overstate the importance of barrel selection, an art that the Russell family has mastered over the years. We start with the “center cut” – the middle floors 3-5 of our 7-story rickhouses – where temperatures are most consistent and are known to produce some of our best whiskey.
Compare this to the extreme heat of the higher floors, or the cooler climate of the lower floors which cause the whiskey barrels to age differently. We like these extremes when blending batches, but when crafting our Russell’s Reserve small batches, or selecting single barrels, we find those middle floors are the sweet spots that allow the whiskey to age most gracefully. That masterful selection is the key to Russell’s Reserve, and you can taste it in every bottle.
