And no, not that one major thoroughfare with the samey high street megastores and generic coffee shops. We’re talking about the neighbourhood backstreets and lively avenues that locals love; the places packed with independent shops and creative people, where a brand-new hi-fi listening bar will share the space with an old-school grocer or a centuries-old pub.
This year, to create our annual ranking of the world’s coolest streets, we asked our global network of local editors and experts to nominate the street that epitomises the very best of their city. Time Out’s global travel team then narrowed down the list and ranked each street against criteria including food, drink, culture, fun and community spirit.
From Saturday samba sessions in Rio de Janeiro to a shapeshifting shopping street in Osaka, every avenue, alleyway and side street on this year’s ranking is unique to its hometown. Walking their length is like taking a stroll through the city in miniature, getting a taste of what makes life there brilliant – from food and culture to shopping and nightlife.

For the past eight years, we’ve made it our mission to scope out the coolest pockets of the world’s greatest cities in order to create our definitive annual ranking. The places where stuff like nightlife, art, culture, and affordable food and drink can be found on every corner and down every backstreet. Where diversity is championed and independent businesses thrive, from old-school boltholes to the newest avant-garde art space. Put simply, the world’s coolest neighbourhoods are places that represent the soul of our cities, while maintaining their own unique local character that draws people in to live, work and play.
So, what are the neighbourhoods that fit the bill this year? To find out, we asked our network of writers and editors across a breadth of cities to nominate the vibiest district in their hometown right now. We then ranked every neighbourhood against criteria including culture, community, liveability, nightlife, food and drink, street life and that hard-to-define sense of ‘nowness’.
On our list this year, you’ll find everything from homely, village-like enclaves with tight-knit communities to revitalised city-centre hubs and formerly dormant, industrial areas transformed into creative districts. Many are underrated spots that sit in the shadow of their commercialised counterparts; others have become unexpected culinary hotspots or magnets for the city’s artists, writers and activists. What they all have in common is a DIY spirit – and an unshakeable proclivity for ingenuity and fun.

On any given day, you can spend the morning seeing world-famous works of art, the afternoon browsing bookshops and poking around indie galleries, and the evening at a comedy night (or the theatre, or a gig). Then there’s all the other stuff, like neighbourhood cinemas, street art, traditional festivals and museum lates. The best bit? In many of the world’s best cities, you can experience all that wonderful human creativity for free.
Every year, Time Out sets out to find today’s cultural capitals, where enviable art collections, brilliant theatre, music and cultural celebrations are accessible and affordable to locals and visitors. To create the list this year, we asked 24,000 locals in over 150 cities to rate the quality and affordability of the culture scene where they live, and to tell us exactly what their city does best, from comedy and carnivals to live music and literature. We then combined their responses with the insight of Time Out’s culture panel – editors, writers and local experts – who voted for the cities they think are particularly exciting places to visit for culture and the arts right now. To ensure the list reflects the best cities for culture globally, we included only the highest-scoring cities for each country.

But cinematically speaking, 2026 has gotten off to, arguably, the most blazing hot start since the pre-pandemic glory days, both critically and at the box office.
Of course, for our purposes, we like to focus on the creative successes, and it’s rare for the first quarter of any year to produce so many achievements of various scopes and budgets. Any time you get both a Project Hail Mary and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple – not to mention leftfield triumphs like The Testament of Ann Lee, Sirât and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain – all before the calendar’s halfway point, you know it’s a good time to be a film fan, especially when there are new spectacles from Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, Marvel and the Dune franchise on the horizon.

1. Lurker (HBO Max)
A retail worker in Los Angeles somehow worms his way into the inner circle of a rising young pop star – but proximity to fame turns out to be a hell of a drug. But if you’re on safari in India, you soon won’t be able to snap a photo of the creature yourself.
Back in November 2025, the country’s Supreme Court passed a ban on the use of mobile phones in tiger reserves across India, largely due to increasingly detrimental behaviour by tourists. The ban is expected to come into place from October this year, after the end of the monsoon season.
But, what does bad tourist behaviour actually refer to? Well, ‘in many ways, it is a classic case of a few people spoiling things for the majority,’ Managing Director of TransIndus Amrit Singh said to Wanderlust. ‘Park authorities had become concerned by the growing number of visitors distressing wildlife and placing themselves, guides and naturalists at risk, simply in pursuit of selfies or social media footage.’

And while it is a shame that the few have spoiled taking photos for the many, there are a couple of alarming instances that shed light on why this measure is necessary.

What cities do best is bring people together – everything we love about urban life, from the galleries and bars to the neighbourhood parks, exists thanks to the communities that make it all happen.
That’s why, every year, we raise a toast to the city with our definitive annual ranking, created on the back of a comprehensive survey of city-dwellers worldwide. Our survey asks not only what people love about their cities – the food scene and nightlife, the shops and museums, the parks and people – but also how it feels to live there. We asked you about happiness, affordability and quality of life, among a variety of other criteria. And, in order to dig deeper into the everyday lives of locals, this year we expanded our survey to cover aspects like love, romance and community feel.
Time Out’s Best Cities with Intrepid Travel spotlights the destinations that offer the best of both worlds: an endlessly exciting catalogue of reasons to visit, as well as all the good stuff that makes a place feel like home. The 50 cities that made the list this year did so thanks to the insights of more than 24,000 people across 150 cities worldwide. To determine the final Best Cities ranking for 2026, we combined their thousands of responses with the votes of more than 100 Time Out city experts. Then we tapped up our network of local writers to tell us exactly what makes their city worth a visit right now.

Yes – we’re talking about theme parks. Why? Well, because Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards has just released a list of the very best ones across the planet, based on which destinations received the highest number of excellent reviews.
Zooming to the top of the ranking, above all other amusement and waterparks on the planet, is Futuroscope in Chasseneuil-du-Poitou, France.

According to the Tripadvisor website, it’s a place to ‘wander through futuristic rides, inventive workshops, and water activities that keep things fresh for children and adults’, and has welcomed more than 50 million visitors since it opened.
The place comprises a whopping 60 hectares of land and 25 original experiences, from 4D rides and massive sculptures to open-air activities, games and live shows.
The Tornado Chasers uses the world’s largest indoor LED screen to plunge visitors into – you guessed it – lights, live screens and special effects to replicate the heart of a storm, and The Greenhouse of Worlds features walls which look as if they’ve come alive with flora and fauna.
Elsewhere on the list are two other entries in France – Disneyland Park and Puy du Fou – and in the UK, Blackpool Pleasure...

Bars have to self-nominate to be considered, and any accolades awarded are based on an assessment of their application plus multiple visits from local, anonymous reviewers. One pin equates to ‘excellent’, two means ‘outstanding’, and three marks an ‘exceptional’ experience.
Back in 2024, Lyaness in London became the world’s first-ever three-pinner, but for 2026, 46 bars from all over the globe have been newly-pinned across the one, two, and three-pin categories – so let’s dive in.

One of the three newly-pinned three-pin bars is Line Athens, a contemporary, stylish spot in the Greek capital’s Kato Petralona neighbourhood. You can find it inside an airy, loft-style former gallery space.
They’re known for homemade fruit wines (known as Why-ins) – of which you can choose a Classic or Fancy – as well as some intriguing cocktails. Think a Delusional Margarita or a Message From Scotland.

Home to around 6,000 islands and a whopping 13,000km of Mediterranean coast, the country has long been a go-to for beach holidays in the summer months, as well as for ancient-history-filled city breaks in Athens, Delphi and the Peloponnese peninsula.
But like many European destinations, Greece is feeling the effects of its own popularity, and now the government has stepped in.
Greek Ministers for Environment and Energy and Tourism, Stavros Pastrvrou and Olga Kefalogianni, have outlined a new ‘Special Spatial Framework’, which essentially plans to overhaul how, where and when development related to tourism takes place.
A statement about the plans read: ‘The key is the transition to a development model that combines quality and sustainability, respecting both the natural environment and the specific characteristics of each region.’
What that means is that regions across Greece will be grouped into one of five categories, which are as follows: high-pressure areas, areas with room for growth, special status areas, island destinations, and the mainland.

On any given day, you can spend the morning seeing world-famous works of art, the afternoon browsing bookshops and poking around indie galleries, and the evening at a comedy night (or the theatre, or a gig). Then there’s all the other stuff, like neighbourhood cinemas, street art, traditional festivals and museum lates. The best bit? In many of the world’s best cities, you can experience all that wonderful human creativity for free.
Every year, Time Out sets out to find today’s cultural capitals, where enviable art collections, brilliant theatre, music and cultural celebrations are accessible and affordable to locals and visitors. To create the list this year, we asked 24,000 locals in over 150 cities to rate the quality and affordability of the culture scene where they live, and to tell us exactly what their city does best, from comedy and carnivals to live music and literature. We then combined their responses with the insight of Time Out’s culture panel – editors, writers and local experts – who voted for the cities they think are particularly exciting places to visit for culture and the arts right now. To ensure the list reflects the best cities for culture globally, we included only the highest-scoring cities for each country.

But cinematically speaking, 2026 has gotten off to, arguably, the most blazing hot start since the pre-pandemic glory days, both critically and at the box office.
Of course, for our purposes, we like to focus on the creative successes, and it’s rare for the first quarter of any year to produce so many achievements of various scopes and budgets. Any time you get both a Project Hail Mary and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple – not to mention leftfield triumphs like The Testament of Ann Lee, Sirât and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain – all before the calendar’s halfway point, you know it’s a good time to be a film fan, especially when there are new spectacles from Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, Marvel and the Dune franchise on the horizon.

But if you’re on safari in India, you soon won’t be able to snap a photo of the creature yourself.
Back in November 2025, the country’s Supreme Court passed a ban on the use of mobile phones in tiger reserves across India, largely due to increasingly detrimental behaviour by tourists. The ban is expected to come into place from October this year, after the end of the monsoon season.
But, what does bad tourist behaviour actually refer to? Well, ‘in many ways, it is a classic case of a few people spoiling things for the majority,’ Managing Director of TransIndus Amrit Singh said to Wanderlust. ‘Park authorities had become concerned by the growing number of visitors distressing wildlife and placing themselves, guides and naturalists at risk, simply in pursuit of selfies or social media footage.’

That’s why, every year, we raise a toast to the city with our definitive annual ranking, created on the back of a comprehensive survey of city-dwellers worldwide. Our survey asks not only what people love about their cities – the food scene and nightlife, the shops and museums, the parks and people – but also how it feels to live there. We asked you about happiness, affordability and quality of life, among a variety of other criteria. And, in order to dig deeper into the everyday lives of locals, this year we expanded our survey to cover aspects like love, romance and community feel.
Time Out’s Best Cities with Intrepid Travel spotlights the destinations that offer the best of both worlds: an endlessly exciting catalogue of reasons to visit, as well as all the good stuff that makes a place feel like home. The 50 cities that made the list this year did so thanks to the insights of more than 24,000 people across 150 cities worldwide. To determine the final Best Cities ranking for 2026, we combined their thousands of responses with the votes of more than 100 Time Out city experts. Then we tapped up our network of local writers to tell us exactly what makes their city worth a visit right now.

Yes – we’re talking about theme parks. Why? Well, because Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards has just released a list of the very best ones across the planet, based on which destinations received the highest number of excellent reviews.
Zooming to the top of the ranking, above all other amusement and waterparks on the planet, is Futuroscope in Chasseneuil-du-Poitou, France.

According to the Tripadvisor website, it’s a place to ‘wander through futuristic rides, inventive workshops, and water activities that keep things fresh for children and adults’, and has welcomed more than 50 million visitors since it opened.
The place comprises a whopping 60 hectares of land and 25 original experiences, from 4D rides and massive sculptures to open-air activities, games and live shows.
The Tornado Chasers uses the world’s largest indoor LED screen to plunge visitors into – you guessed it – lights, live screens and special effects to replicate the heart of a storm, and The Greenhouse of Worlds features walls which look as if they’ve come alive with flora and fauna.

Bars have to self-nominate to be considered, and any accolades awarded are based on an assessment of their application plus multiple visits from local, anonymous reviewers. One pin equates to ‘excellent’, two means ‘outstanding’, and three marks an ‘exceptional’ experience.
Back in 2024, Lyaness in London became the world’s first-ever three-pinner, but for 2026, 46 bars from all over the globe have been newly-pinned across the one, two, and three-pin categories – so let’s dive in.

Photograph: The Domino Club / The Pinnacle GuideWe all know the mark of a truly brilliant restaurant is the glint of a Michelin star, but just three years after its launch, the Pinnacle Guide is fast becoming the equivalent barometer for the bar industry.
Bars have to self-nominate to be considered, and any accolades awarded are based on an assessment of their application plus multiple visits from local, anonymous reviewers. One pin equates to ‘excellent’, two means ‘outstanding’, and three marks an ‘exceptional’ experience.
Back in 2024, Lyaness in London became the world’s first-ever three-pinner, but for 2026, 46 bars from all over the globe have been newly-pinned across the one, two, and three-pin categories – so let’s dive in.

One of the three newly-pinned three-pin bars is Line Athens, a contemporary, stylish spot in the Greek capital’s Kato Petralona neighbourhood. You can find it inside an airy, loft-style former gallery space.
They’re known for homemade fruit wines (known as Why-ins) – of which you can choose a Classic or Fancy – as well as some intriguing cocktails. Think a Delusional Margarita or a Message From Scotland.
New to the two-pin category is Handshake Speakeasy, a 1920s-inspired bar in Mexico City, and in the one-pin category, The Domino Club, a jazz bar hidden behind the facade of a barber shop in the UK city of Leeds. However, there’s plenty more where these came from – scroll on for the complete...

If you’re passionate about something, you’re going to feel compelled to fiercely defend your favourites and shout down whatever you think is undeserving. Inflaming public discussion is one of the reasons we’ve put together this list of the greatest films ever made. It gets you thinking, and, when reasoned and civil enough, perhaps rethinking your own opinion.
It seems like a particularly good time to get the discussion going, too, given that movies are, slowly but surely, inching back toward the center of popular culture. Young people are going to cinemas again, particularly for repertory screenings, and making hits of original movies from fresh filmmakers like Ryan Coogler's Oscar-record-breaking Sinners. Letterboxd is growing in usage, and the Criterion closet is all over social media. New cinephiles are being made every day, and we’ve always thought of this list mostly as an educational tool for burgeoning film buffs. It covers a lot of ground: over 100 years, multiple countries, and just about every genre imaginable. So let’s get talking – and most importantly, watching.

Photograph: dancar / ShutterstockWhen you think of sunny European destinations, Greece is probably one of (if not the first) place that springs to mind. Home to around 6,000 islands and a whopping 13,000km of Mediterranean coast, the country has long been a go-to for beach holidays in the summer months, as well as for ancient-history-filled city breaks in Athens, Delphi and the Peloponnese peninsula.
But like many European destinations, Greece is feeling the effects of its own popularity, and now the government has stepped in.
Greek Ministers for Environment and Energy and Tourism, Stavros Pastrvrou and Olga Kefalogianni, have outlined a new ‘Special Spatial Framework’, which essentially plans to overhaul how, where and when development related to tourism takes place.
A statement about the plans read: ‘The key is the transition to a development model that combines quality and sustainability, respecting both the natural environment and the specific characteristics of each region.’
What that means is that regions across Greece will be grouped into one of five categories, which are as follows: high-pressure areas, areas with room for growth, special status areas, island destinations, and the mainland.
