This was always my childhood dream. Before I understood what I was staring up at I wanted to be part of it. Twinkling lights created pictures in the blackness of space. They called to me, enticing my young mind to explore their domain. Like all of us, what was important to me then transformed into something completely different as I aged. The luster of the stars has dulled. What draws me now is one speck of light where a new year is being celebrated. It’s where I long to be, celebrating with those I’ve left behind and knowing it’s impossible.

That makes for some tough, raw reads. Miscarriage, infidelity, chronic pain, money, addiction, fear for someone you love. Not much is softened or dressed up. By the end, I felt like I needed a cigarette, and I don’t even smoke.

He bent down and dug his fingers into the dry dirt of the arroyo. It hadn’t seen rain in a month or more he surmised. His horse needed water. So, did he. He stood and surveyed the flat arid land around him. Except for the way he’d came. Couldn’t go that direction and if anyone was following him, they knew where he was. In the west, once his eyes adjusted to the bright white of the scorched desert ground, something took shape. A church tower. A town. A long way out still. He couldn’t push the horse much harder without water, so at least another day through the desert heat. There was nothing for it. Do or die. If it was a ghost town and there was nothing there to drink, he’d die anyway.

They had many, many reasons, but most recently because he had dragged them to an abandoned church in the middle of the forest, all crumbling stone walls and no roof. Plus, he had brought along what they thought was the latest proof of his bad taste in women. The two of them would love to tell Jim he was being stupid, but there was a question of protocol. How soon after a man had lost his three children in a horrifying car accident could you tell him he was being an idiot? One year? Two? When you lose your wife to that same accident, one year and an asylum later, is the clock reset?
