The Puerto Rican singer-songwriter is back with the sonically rich ‘OMAKASE.’

Álvaro Díaz is the genre-bending maverick of reggaeton. Throughout his career, the Puerto Rican superstar has become known for pushing the music of his island into the future. Now Díaz is serving up his most ambitious album yet with OMAKASE, in which he continues to reshape reggaeton while expanding his sonic palette with genres like cumbia and amapiano.
“I’m really proud of the things that I’ve been accomplishing in this art world,” Díaz tells Genius over Zoom. “I was watching an interview of myself from 10 years ago, and the guy told me, ‘You know, if you go the other route, you’re going to make it faster.’”
That interviewer meant that Díaz could’ve done what was expected of him and create safe music that didn’t move the genre forward. But that’s never been his approach.
“I was saying, ‘But I know if I stay on my path and I make it, everyone is going to be proud of me because I made it by staying in my lane,’” Díaz says. “I’m proud of the sound that I have developed. The love that people have shown me is my energy.”
Before crafting hits for himself and other artists, he was born Jorge Álvaro Díaz Rodríguez in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As a child, he was a firsthand witness to the reggaeton boom of the 2000s. The genre is in his DNA, but what sets Díaz apart from his peers is that he also grew up listening to rock and alternative bands like blink-182, Deftones, and Incubus. He also cites Kanye West and Puerto Rican rebels Calle 13 as acts that shaped his spirit as an artist to always think outside the box.
“The music that Kanye made was so different to what I was listening to, and then I would get used to it, and he would drop another album that sounds completely different to what I just got used to,” Díaz recalls. “With time, I learned what he did, which was to keep pushing the limits and be outside of the comfort zone. In the Latin community, that’s what Calle 13 was doing. When it was time to do my music, I was definitely inspired by that, so I always try to not take the safest route and to push music that I love.”
While Díaz was laying the groundwork for his music career a decade ago, he was also getting his foot in the door by writing and producing for other artists. Another one of his close friends that was coming up at the time was Rauw Alejandro. Díaz co-penned Alejandro’s most adventurous cuts, like “Pensándote,” “Aquel Nap ZzZz,” and “Baila Conmigo,” a collaboration with Selena Gomez.
“I’ve always been a black sheep,” Díaz says. “For awhile, I thought maybe what I’m doing is so different that people aren’t going to be able to digest it, but when you have the privilege of working with these artists and you see thousands of people sing these songs and connect with these songs that you co-produced, it makes you know that this is possible. That made me more comfortable when I’m writing to just keep trusting the process because art is about trusting yourself.”
Díaz soon established himself as reggaeton’s most conceptual artist with his breakthrough album, 2021’s Felicilandia, and its sequel, 2024’s SAYONARA. With his LPs, he infused the genre with elements of hip-hop, R&B, EDM, punk, and more.
For OMAKASE, in order to break out of that world of Felicilandia, Díaz looked to his cousin, Chef Tino, for inspiration. The title is a reference to a Japanese restaurant where the chef curates the dishes that are served to the patrons.
“The plan was to do a simple album, but it’s an Álvaro Díaz album, so it never turns out simple,” Díaz says with a smile. He breaks the LP down into four sections, which opens with the raw part that he likens to basic ingredients of the meal. The dreamy “BIMMEL.” includes uncredited vocals from Alejandro, Papi Sousa, Jesse Báez, and Feid.
“That is like an Easter egg for my fans on my album,” Díaz says. “It was so cool to do that. They’ve always been a part of my albums. To have them on a hook, then Jesse goes on the verse, and Feid does his ‘whoas’ and the harmonies, it’s a fun thing. My fans are going to appreciate that. I feel like this is my most Álvaro Díaz album, and I wanted them to be a part of it.”
The second part of OMAKASE is the salsa portion of the album, where Díaz adds the seasoning. This is where he explores different rhythms, like cumbia on the nostalgic “PIENSOENTI.,” with late Mexican producer Milkman, and amapiano on the swaggering “TREINEL.,” featuring Rubí.
Díaz turns up the heat in the fire section of the album, where he really gets cooking. Alternative and electronica collide in the experimental “MALASNOTICIAS.,” featuring LATIN MAFIA.
“It’s a love song where you can feel the chaos,” he says. “You can feel the intensity. We’ve been friends for a long time, and I’ve been in the studio with them for a long time, too. We were waiting for the perfect song and the perfect moment and this is it. We love this song and we’re proud of it.”
The LP is rounded out by the heart section, where Díaz finally serves the dish. The last track, “LAÚLTIMACENA.,” which includes the voice of Díaz’s late grandmother, sounds like his Latin punk version of blink-182’s “I Miss You.”
In October, Díaz will release a collaborative EP with Feid. “Feid is one of my favorite artists and one of my good friends too,” he says. “It’s like magic when we’re in the studio together. We have great chemistry. Now we’re in the process of selecting the songs, and they’re so good that we’re having the worst time ever.”
Díaz promises that his “best tour ever” is coming as well.
“I love when people give me the opportunity to be myself,” he adds. “I want to prove that you can stay in your lane and do things as you like and that people will love you and appreciate you for being a genuine guy.”

The 10 Annotation Commandments:
Follow these rules of thumb to avoid having your annotation rejected by an editor.
Don’t Restate The Lyric: Most lyrics don’t need to be explained—the meaning is obvious. Don’t just paraphrase them using other words! Not all lines need to be annotated.
Write Like A Human: An annotation shouldn’t sound like a robot wrote it. Avoid overly complicated words, but don’t be too casual either.
Watch Grammar & Spelling: Writing like a human doesn’t mean forgetting the basic elements of style. Annotations are important, so don’t undermine them with sloppy writing.
Do Research & Hyperlink Sources: Avoid plagiarism and speculation by searching for original sources and putting the information in your own words. Don’t just cite or copy from Wikipedia. Be sure to link your sources in the annotation.
Highlight All Relevant Lyrics: Don’t just highlight a single word—annotate at least one full line. Sometimes you need two or even four bars to get the full context, but be wary of highlighting more than four lines for an annotation.
Master Formatting: Familiarize yourself with markdown, the basic code used in annotations that allows you to create italics, bold, blockquotes, and all the other formatting flourishes that will make your ’tates a joy to read.
Include Media That Adds Depth: If you add an image, it should really illustrate something specific in the lyric, not just a general idea.
Be Objective: Your annotations shouldn’t be rude or demeaning to the artist, and you shouldn’t write like a corny superfan.
Be Concise: Here’s a good challenge: say what you mean in the fewest words possible. Wordiness ruins good annotations, but don’t go overboard—not providing enough information ruins tates, too. Annotations should have more than 50 characters.
Be Evergreen: Avoid time-sensitive phrasing that will quickly become inaccurate (e.g. “two years ago,” “next summer,” “recently,” “upcoming,” etc).

I can’t give too much away, but the red string is important to the themes of the album.
Olivia initially described the single, saying “It’s karaokable if you’re sad.”
The song was first teased on May 18, 2026, when two lyrical snippets were painted on Olivia’s wall mural in Los Angeles, with stitching embedded in the font. She officially announced the song’s release the following day.

Olivia brought the verse of this song to the studio in September and we very quickly wrote the chorus & bridge and laid down a demo for it… I think it happened so fast that we weren’t sure what to think of it at the time… but when we came back the next day and listened to it, I remember we looked at each other and it was one of those special moments when you’re making a record… like… ‘I think we got one’…
On a side note… one of my favorite things about the recording of the song, is that we used the demo vocal and guitar from the first day… we tracked two guitars and two lead vocals and panned them left and right, which is something we started to implement a bit more on this album and becomes a bit of a theme!+21Did the English band The Cure influence this song?
