[H1] About VSI
Share Facebook LinkedIn Email

Voluntary Service International (VSI) is the Irish branch of Service Civil International (SCI), a worldwide peace movement that was founded after the First World War. VSI is a volunteer-based organisation, founded in 1965 and headquartered in Dublin. For 60 years VSI has promoted peace, social justice and sustainable development at home and abroad. During that time walls have fallen, borders have moved and the challenges facing us have changed. While there have been significant improvements during this time, many of the old problems remain (e.g. conflict, human rights abuses) alongside the emergence of new problems (e.g. climate change, growing inequality).    These challenges are large and multifaceted but we at VSI believe that we can play a part in addressing them. At the heart of many of these problems lies a lack of understanding, of people, their backgrounds, their cultures, their own day-to-day challenges. There is a lack of understanding of the environment, its importance, its fragility, our impact on it and of the interdependence of all these things.  The tool we have chosen to help combat this is a simple one but we know through experience that it is a powerful one: volunteering. By bringing together people from across the globe to participate in values-based volunteering, we aim to increase awareness and understanding of the people, the societies and the environment around us. This deeper understanding will contribute to a global and local society which is more open-minded, aware and responsible for its own behaviour and actions. We are able to do this with the help of our network partner organisations at home and abroad, enabling volunteering experiences that promote peace, social justice and sustainable development.
[H3] Our vision

[H3] Our mission
is a world of peace, social justice and sustainable development, where all people live together with mutual respect.    is to promote a culture of peace, social justice and sustainable development by organizing and supporting volunteering projects, both in Ireland and internationally.
[H3] Our Values
Volunteering is at the heart of VSI’s work. We support engagement, without material reward, that benefits society and aims to achieve positive social change. This is guided at all times by our core values. Every voluntary project, meeting, exchange or training reflects these values:   Non-violence - choosing peaceful resistance and conflict resolution without recourse to violence  as a principle and a method    Human Rights - respect for individuals as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights   Solidarity - international solidarity for a more just and equitable world, and solidarity between all human beings   Respect for the Environment - and the ecosystems of which we are a part and upon which we are dependent   Inclusion - being open and inclusive of all individuals without discrimination  Empowerment - providing people with knowledge and tools to understand and act to transform the social, cultural and economic structures that affect their lives at all levels  Co-operation - with local communities as well as other local, national and international partners to strengthen the positive potential within civil society as a whole
[H3] Strategic Plan
Voluntary Service International (VSI) is the Irish branch of Service Civil International (SCI), a worldwide peace movement that was founded after the First World War. We are a volunteer-based movement, founded in 1965 and headquartered in Dublin.   In 55 years we have achieved a lot as an organisation. We recognise that over this time the world has changed and that we, as VSI, need to adapt to this and the new challenges it presents. This strategic plan represents our vision and intent for how we plan to meet those challenges.  Read our Strategic Plan for 2021-2025 Voluntary Service International (VSI), is a company limited by guarantee, registered in Ireland with registered office at 4-7 North Brunswick Street, Dublin 7, D07 RHA8 and registered company number 140520. VSI is also a charity (Charity Reg. No. 20023065) and holds CHY number 9220. VSI is supported by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration & Youth; the European Commission through Leargas and the Health Service Executive.  If you are interested in becoming a member of VSI go to our  membership page

[H1] Short-Term Projects In Europe
Share Facebook LinkedIn Email

Our International Volunteer Projects (IVP) are a unique form of volunteering that bring together people from around the world to work on short-term projects with local communities. Our short-term projects take place in Europe (including in Ireland!) and usually last 2 weeks, the type of work involved varies greatly. Volunteers will get the chance to live and work in a diverse environment with people from different cultures and backgrounds, gaining experience and understanding of the lives of people from other parts of the world. Please note, we send volunteers on short and long term projects to countries in Europe (including Ireland!). We send volunteers on longer-term projects to countries in the Global South. A world of adventure awaits! Find out more and search for your volunteer project below!Important info before starting your search:When you click on the link below you will leave the VSI website and go to the volunteer project search engine and application pages of our international peace network SCI (VSI is the Irish branch).  VSI are unable to send volunteers to all the projects listed. For this reason, please create an account before searching the projects, you will then be able to see only the projects that we can send volunteers to.To create an account, click on the search engine link below, when the page opens click ‘log in’ at the top right corner and follow the instructions – it’s very quick! Thank you : )
[H3] International database of short-term volunteer projects!
The projects listed on the database are managed by SCI branches and partners across Europe, the project titles and descriptions are generally written by non-native English speakers, so please excuse us if some of them are hard-to-understand or use unusual language! The database serves over 130 organisations in more than 90 countries worldwide! Project feesVSI is a small charity and we charge a fee on a sliding scale (€55 - €155) to volunteer on our projects, this includes food, accommodation, basic insurance whilst on the project and VSI annual membership. Volunteers pay for their own travel to the country and internal travel to/from the projects and any visa fees.   When you have completed the application form at the link above, you will need to pay the project fee - return to this page and follow the links below.   Short-term projects in Europe: If you are waged €155 If you are unwaged €105 Click here to pay the project fee Please note, some of the descriptions mention an additional fee (of €50.00) when applying through non-SCI organisations, VSI is an SCI branch and this additional fee does not apply.  Some projects charge an additional fee for all volunteers, this will be clearly stated. No fundraising is needed to volunteer on our projects.      If you have any questions or would like more info on a project please contact us. We believe that a greater awareness of global issues and a deeper understanding of people will help to create an international culture that is more peaceful, open-minded, and responsible for its actions. Our network of volunteers helps us to promote our vision by promoting a culture of peace, social justice, and sustainable development worldwide.
[H3] The main themes VSI and SCI work with are:
Anti-Racism and work with Ethnic Minorities  North - South Solidarity  Disarmament and Peace  Work with People with Disabilities  Community Support  Ecological, Environmental and Agricultural  Projects Focussing on Gender  Social Inclusion  Arts, Culture and Local History Ideology and Spirituality
[H3] Experience and qualifications
The most important qualities you need are enthusiasm, flexibility and willingness to experience something completely new. All volunteers must be 18 or over, generally there is no upper age limit, if there is, it will be stated in the project description. You don’t need any skills or qualifications to participate, apart from a small number of projects that require certain skills, e.g. language. This will be stated clearly in the project description. As a volunteer on one of our projects, you will only need to work as much as you are able. The success of the project depends largely on the willingness of individual volunteers to involve themselves in the group-life by 'mucking in,’ communicating, and making friends with other volunteers and the local community.
[H3] Costs: small project fees apply but no fundraising is needed to volunteer on our projects
Food and accommodation are provided while on the individual projects.  Volunteers pay for their own travel to the country and internal travel to/from the projects.  Volunteers are covered under a basic SCI Insurance policy.  Volunteers cover any visa fees.  Volunteers pay a project fee to VSI from €55  - €155, which includes membership with VSI for one year. Additional projects within your membership year are only €50.Please note that some of our partner organisations, e.g. Iceland and Estonia, charge an extra fee which the volunteers pay on arrival. This will be stated in the project info.
[H3] Getting there
Volunteers organise and pay for their own travel arrangements to and from the project. An info sheet is provided in advance of the project which contains travel info to the project.
[H3] Food and accommodation
Food and accommodation are provided free of charge during the project. Usually the group will share the tasks of cooking and cleaning on a rota basis, so bring your favourite recipes with you! Living conditions are usually basic and shared e.g. sleeping in dorm-style rooms in a hostel.
[H3] Leisure and free time
An important part of every project is how the group organises its social activities. After the day's work there will be plenty of time to socialise, visit local areas, talk, play music, sing, write postcards, swim, learn local phrases... A lot of activities are decided by the group together.
[H3] Study element/educational component
There will usually be time set aside to learn more about the issues relevant to the project e.g. on an environmental project there could be a workshop on climate justice. If there is a study/ educational component to the project, volunteers are asked to inform themselves about the issues before going to the project and also to bring any relevant information etc. in order to participate fully in the discussions.
[H3] Language
Speaking other languages always helps when travelling but the language used on most projects is English. Certain projects have specific language requirements which are specified in the descriptions.
[H3] Being part of an international group
Each project will have a mixture of participants from many countries. Volunteers will find themselves working and living with people who are of different nationalities, ages, attitudes, backgrounds and cultures. Sensitivity to other people in the group is very important. Native English speakers should be careful not to talk too fast so everybody can understand them. Volunteers on the projects should be open to new experiences. Another part of the group experience is a commitment to work out decisions and problems together. On many projects there will be one or two people who act as 'Leaders' or 'Co-ordinators', usually selected and trained by SCI branches or partner organisations.

This ongoing initiative brings together a small group of young people to learn about climate justice and explore ways to contribute to its achievement.Participants, aged 18-25, examine the climate crisis from a human-centered perspective, focusing on the inequalities exacerbated by climate change. They will recognize that climate action is just one piece of the larger puzzle necessary to reduce inequality and poverty, and create a more just, sustainable future for all.The project is blended between in-person and online sessions where possible, giving participants the chance to connect, reflect, and collaborate on meaningful action.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

32 BS / 100

VSI is a high-substance, low-BS entity that prioritizes operational transparency over marketing polish. It provides the ‘boring’ details—fees, insurance, and project codes—that high-BS sites usually hide behind emotional fluff.

1. Publish and link to the 2024/2025 Annual Financial Report directly in the footer to meet industry proof expectations. 2. Implement Person schema for the Board of Directors and CEO to bridge the identity gap. 3. Replace the internal review count with a link to an external verified platform like Trustpilot or a dedicated ‘Volunteer Stories’ page with specific dates and outcomes. 4. Update the ‘Strategic Plan’ section to include a direct PDF download of the 2021-2025 document to move from a claim of a plan to the proof of one.

The website perfectly aligns with the Charities, Nonprofits & NGOs category, focusing heavily on volunteer recruitment, peace promotion, and social justice. The content provides specific operational details such as charity registration numbers and government funding sources that confirm its status as a legitimate Irish NGO.

“The score of 32 is driven primarily by the lack of verified external reviews (Trust and Proof) and the use of industry-standard jargon like 'capacity building' and 'sustainable development' (Commodity Fingerprint). However, the site's extremely high specificity in project data and legal transparency (Information Density) prevented a higher BS score.”
