Are Manhattan Prep practice tests harder?

A lot of people think that Manhattan Prep practice tests are harder than the real thing. We do our best to mimic the official exams as closely as we can…but we also don’t want the real test to feel harder than anything you’ve ever practiced. So, yes, if we do have to err on one side or the other, we try to err a little on the harder side. (We do adjust our scoring algorithm, though, to try to mimic as closely as possible the score that you might get on the real test.)

Is test prep worth it?

It’s rare for someone to do well on a standardized test without any study material or prep courses at all. After all, it’d be rare to do well on a school test if you didn’t study. So you’re probably going to need to buy at least some study material, but you can decide what you think is of best value for you. The other thing to keep in mind is your potential reward: A higher score could get you into a higher-ranked school or earn you grants, fellowships, or other scholarships—in other words, an investment in test prep could pay for itself many times over.

What is the best test prep?

How do I prepare for a test online?

Taking your exam online is very similar to taking your exam in person. The online exams still cover the same content area and question types and they still use the same scoring mechanism. There are some minor differences related to your scratch paper when taking the
GMAT Online or
GRE Online; you’ll also have to set up a quiet space with a steady internet connection from which to take the exam. Other than that, studying for an online exam is pretty much the same as preparing for a testing-center exam.

The GMAT is an entrance exam used for MBA and other business programs; you can take it online or in-person. It tests your logical, analytical, and quantitative reasoning skills—all things you’ll need to excel in grad school. Getting ready for the GMAT can actually help you to get ready for b-school itself.Including breaks, you’ll spend a little less than 3.5 hours taking the GMAT. The GMAT consists of four sections: Quant, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning (a mix of quant and verbal), and the Essay (formally known as the Analytical Writing Assessment).The GMAT is definitely not an easy exam. It’s a computer adaptive test (CAT), which means that it actually adapts to you as you take it. As you answer questions correctly, the test will give you harder ones (and, when you miss problems, it will give you easier ones). As a result, the GMAT feels hard for everybody, even when you’re well prepared. But there’s a big benefit: The process of studying for the GMAT will also help prepare you to excel in grad school.A good GMAT score is one that’s above the average for your target school. Most schools publish their average scores, so do your research. The GMAT is just one component of your application. You can still gain admission to a school even with a below-average-for-that-school score (by definition, lots of admitted students will be below the average!), but your chances improve if you are above a school’s average.Studying for the GMAT is like taking a semester-long, university-level course, so you do have some work to do. (But you want to go to grad school, right? It shouldn’t be easy.) You’ll need three types of materials to get ready: Practice questions, practice tests, and material that teaches you the facts, rules, and strategies you’ll need in order to get better and faster at answering those questions. You can buy official practice questions and tests from the test-maker at mba.com—but the official materials don’t teach you how to get better. For that, look for material from a test-prep company. First, try all the free GMAT materials you can find, then decide what you want to buy.Most people study for between 2 and 6 months. The timeframe depends on two major data points: Your current scoring level and the final score you want to get. Take a practice test to learn your current level. Look at the websites of your target schools to set a goal for your final score. If you’re looking for either a large score increase (200+ points) or an exceptionally high score (655+), you’ll probably be studying for 4 to 6 months.Plan ahead! GMAT scores are good for 5 years, so ideally get your GMAT out of the way well before you have to start filling out applications. (US full-time programs typically release applications in June or July.) Consider starting your studies in January of the year in which you want to apply or even a year or two before that. Life intervenes sometimes—if you get a new job or a great promotion, you may want to put your GMAT studies on hold for 6 months to get yourself into the new groove.

The EA began as an exam for Executive MBA (EMBA) candidates, but many other programs accept it now, including full-time and part-time MBA programs and specialized master’s programs. If you are a busy professional looking for some 1:1 expert guidance to get the score you need on the EA, while still managing all of your other professional and personal obligations, our sessions are for you.Anyone who feels comfortable with grammar and whose schools all accept the EA should strongly consider taking the EA. The EA has a crucial advantage over the GMAT (and the GRE): It isn't used in business school rankings. As a result, schools use the EA differently, as a threshold or baseline indicator: As long as you score at or above the school’s baseline level, you’re good. Unlike the GMAT and GRE, you don’t need a stratospheric score (though a higher score can still help for grants, fellowships, and scholarships).The GMAT is 2 hours and 15 minutes long; the EA is 1.5 hours long. Both exams test almost the exact same content across three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and a data-focused section that is called Data Insights on the GMAT and Integrated Reasoning on the EA. The only content difference: The EA tests grammar, while the GMAT does not. Both exams weigh all three sections equally when calculating your total score.On the EA, you can skip around within part of a section or go back to questions that you have already answered. On the GMAT, you first have to answer all of the questions in order, but you can then review your problems at the end of each section and change up to three answers.If you’re aiming for an Executive MBA program, a good score is 150+, though certain highly competitive Exec MBA programs may want to see something in the 153+ range.If you’re aiming for a regular MBA program, a good score is 155+.
