[IMG: Tandem app faqs] [IMG: Tandem app faqs] [IMG: Tandem app faqs] [IMG: Tandem app faqs] [H1] Frequently asked questions [H2] Frequently asked questions [H3] What is Tandem and how does it work? Launched in 2015, Tandem is the mobile app that brings together millions of language learners. Members of the community form one-on-one Tandem partnerships to teach each other their native languages via text, audio, and video chat. Tandem has funding from some of Europe’s most prominent investors and is supported by the Tandem Fundazioa, the organization that developed the tandem language learning method. On the Tandem app, after filling out your application and being accepted into our community, you will be shown members from all over the world who speak the language(s) you want to learn and who want to learn the language(s) you speak. You will then be able to reach out to other members of the community and start your language exchange. We hope you learn lots and have a great time meeting new friends! [H3] What is a language exchange? Language exchange actively goes by many different terms— conversation exchange, intercambio, tandem. Regardless of which term you might be familiar with, they all have the same definition: “Language exchange is a method of language learning based on mutual language practicing by learning partners who are speakers of different languages. This is usually done by two native speakers teaching each other their native language.” — Wikipedia In other words, language exchange is the process of joining forces with someone, known as your language exchange partner, who is ideally a native speaker of the language you want to learn. Through a two-way process of direct communication and conversation, both learners are given the opportunity to improve their target language skills and proficiency while simultaneously fostering intercultural competence. Read more about language exchange here. [H3] What are the Tandem Community Guidelines, and what happens when I break them? Tandem’s mission is to connect the world through languages. We're here to spark meaningful conversations, learn languages, and celebrate our different cultures. Our Community Guidelines are grounded in three core principles that serve our mission and help our members get the best language exchange experience: We are here to learn. We celebrate our diversity. We share generously. We take care of each other and stand ready to protect our community from those who act against our guidelines. Depending on the severity of the community guideline you have broken, you will receive a warning or a ban from one of our Community Safety team. If you receive a warning for a second time within a 6-month period, you will be banned from the community. [H3] Where can I download Tandem? Tandem is available to download on iOS and Android devices as well as our web app which can be found here. You can download Tandem from the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. [H3] How many members from different countries and cities do you have on Tandem? We have Tandem members in over 180 countries and thousands of cities around the world. Here’s a list of the most popular cities in English and in German. [H3] What languages can I learn and teach on Tandem? We have a whopping 300 languages to learn and teach on Tandem. Everything from German to Tok Pisin and Walloon to Lozi. You can find a list of our most popular languages here, and a full list of languages here. [H3] Why are my messages showing as sent but not delivered? If you send a message to your language exchange partner and they have their status set to “offline” on Tandem, they are not connected to the internet at the time, or are having connection issues, your message will remain as “sent” until they come back to their chat list and refresh their chat stream. Your message will then be marked as “delivered” until they have read your message which will be marked as “read”. [H3] I submitted my application but haven’t been accepted into the community yet. Why is this? Your application can get rejected for several reasons, including if you’re under 16 years of age, or haven’t used a real profile photo or name. Each application is individually reviewed, which can also take time, and occasionally, there is a waitlist in certain countries to keep our community and languages balanced. [H3] How can I cancel my Tandem Pro membership? You can review, cancel or edit your Tandem subscription anytime. If you have an iOS device, go to Settings -> Tap on your name -> Apple ID -> Subscriptions -> Tandem. If you have an Android device, open the Google Play Store app, and then tap Menu -> My Apps -> Subscriptions -> Tandem. [H3] How can I get a refund? If you are using an Android device and purchased a subscription from the Google Play store, you are eligible for a refund if you get in touch with us within 14 days of a 1-month subscription or within 30 days of a 3-month or 12-month subscription. If you’re using an Android device and it has been less than 48 hours since you purchased your subscription, you can request a refund from Google Play. If it has been more than 48 hours since your purchase, please forward your Google Play receipt and your email address to us so we can issue your refund. If you are using an iOS device, please request a refund from iTunes via the link in your purchase confirmation email within 14 days of your subscription purchase. [H3] How can I report someone? To ensure Tandem remains a safe and friendly place to learn languages, our community relies on all of us to report members who act against the Tandem Community Guidelines. There are two ways to report someone, either on the screen where you chat with them or on their profile. To report a member from the chat with them: Tap the three dots button in the top right-hand corner. Tap “Report (name of the member).” Choose one of the report reasons and include as much additional information as possible. Finally, tap the “Report to Tandem” button to make your report. To report someone from their profile: Tap the warning mark (!) in the top right-hand corner. Choose one of the report reasons and include as much additional information as possible. Finally, tap the “Report to Tandem” button to make your report. In order for the Community Safety team to review your report as quickly as possible, please remember to attach your conversation history as evidence when making the report. Our community takes reports very seriously. The Community Safety team reviews each report, and if there is evidence that the member you reported acted against any of the Community Guidelines, they will be warned or their account will be banned. Don’t worry – the member won’t be notified that you reported them! The Community Safety team may contact you directly if they need additional information to resolve the report. [H3] Why did I receive a warning? You have received a warning because you were reported by another Tandem member for breaking the Tandem Community Guidelines. The Community Safety Team has reviewed the evidence and decided to give you a warning. By using Tandem, you agree to Tandem’s Terms of Service and violating these again will result in your account being permanently banned. Follow the link to find the full text of our Terms of Service. [H3] Why have I been banned from Tandem? You have been banned from Tandem because you broke the Tandem Community Guidelines. By using Tandem, you agree to Tandem’s Terms of Service. Tandem reserves the right to ban your account if you violate these terms. [H3] How can I delete my account? We’re sorry to hear that you want to leave the Tandem community. If you have an active account you can permanently delete it by going to your Profile -> Settings -> Delete my account. Please keep in mind that deleting your account will not cancel your Tandem Pro subscription. If you haven't been accepted into the community yet, you will be able to delete your application yourself after waiting for 7 days. Simply tap the "cancel my application" button and the information you gave in your application will be deleted. You can read more about our privacy policy here. [H3] Are professional tutors still available on Tandem? In 2020, we decided to discontinue the Tandem Tutors feature to focus on what we do best: facilitating authentic 1:1 language exchanges between members. We deeply appreciate all the tutors who shared their expertise and contributed to our community. Now, Tandem is all about helping you connect with native speakers for meaningful conversations and immersive language practice. [IMG: Image]

[IMG: New Blog Banner Bold] [IMG: New Blog Banner Bold] [IMG: New Blog Banner Bold] [IMG: New Blog Banner Bold] [H1] Our Tandem Story [H2] Connecting the world through languages. There are many stages of learning a language. We start by picking up the basic vocabulary, progress to formulating simple sentences, and then wonder why on earth the grammar can’t just be simple for once. Somewhere down the line, we realize it’s time to talk with a native speaker and practice everything we’ve learned so far. That’s where language exchange or Tandem language learning comes in. Connecting with other people has never been so easy. Despite this, it's often hard to find the right language exchange partner, one who shares our interests and has similar language goals. What if there was a convenient and accessible way to connect with like-minded native speakers of the language you want to practice? Tandem was launched in 2015 by three friends on a mission to connect the world through languages. Thanks to our international team of language lovers based in Berlin, we’ve come pretty far since then. Today, 35+ million members from around the world use our mobile and web apps to help each other learn new languages via text, audio, and video chat. Join the Tandem community and you can speak any language too!Sign up for free

Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.
Based on 816 businesses audited.
Tandem has 17.5 points less BS than the average for Education, Schools & Universities.
Education, Schools & Universities BS: Tandem (tandem.net)
Tandem is a high-substance utility that avoids the education sector’s typical fluff by focusing on community scale and functional tools. It is one of the rare platforms where the FAQ provides genuine transparency regarding discontinued features and ban policies.
Add outbound links to the TechCrunch and Mashable articles to validate press accolades. Provide the names and professional profiles of the three founders in the About Us section. Explicitly name the certifying body for the CEFR-aligned certificates to provide third-party validation.
Tandem fits the Education category as a peer-to-peer language learning platform. It distinguishes itself from traditional schools by focusing on conversation exchange utility rather than academic pedagogy.
“The low BS score is driven by high semantic coherence and the absence of generic education cliches. Points were primarily deducted for unlinked press logos and the lack of verifiable digital footprints for the founders and certificate partners.”
This training module utilizes a snapshot of public data from Tandem, captured on May 25, 2026, to demonstrate how machine logic evaluates different types of business narratives.
Purpose: This data is presented under “Fair Use” / “Educational Exception” for the purpose of forensic semantic analysis, allowing users to compare human intuition against machine-generated evaluations.
Notice to Tandem: This analysis is part of a non-adversarial audit conducted by 1 Euro SEO. The results provided by 1EuroSEO are intended as professional feedback to help improve any website’s machine-readability and authority signals. The 1EuroSEO BS Detection Tool is a free tool, and anyone can test any company to see how their content is interpreted by AI models.
Any company can use the insights for free and improve its voice by comparing it to industry clichés or competitors. When a company has updated its content, it can always submit a new audit request, which will be reflected in a new current score.
