[H3] What is health insurance?
Private health insurance, often referred to as private medical insurance, is an insurance policy that safeguards your health. You pay a monthly, or yearly, subscription and this covers the cost of treatment that you need, as long as it is covered by your policy.
At the heart of private health insurance is a commitment to your wellbeing, and the wellbeing of your loved ones. With AXA Health, your health comes first. We’ll support you with fast access to diagnosis and treatment, as well as guidance and tools that can help you manage your health every day, not just when there’s a problem. Our AXA Health Plan, like most health insurance, is designed to cover new conditions that develop after you join and not pre-existing conditions.
As well as private health insurance, we also offer health insurance for small businesses and corporations - see below.

[H4] Build your own plan - choose from four options to create the plan that’s right for you.
Our AXA Health Plan gives you the flexibility to combine care options to best suit your needs. You can even choose to have different care options for different people on your plan, giving you more control over your cover levels and the cost of your plan.
Stand-alone options include Outpatient diagnosis and care, Inpatient and day patient care and Cancer care.
Mental health care must be selected with one of the other care options. Inpatient and day patient care must be included when buying Cancer care and Outpatient diagnosis and care together.
As with most insurance, there are some things we don’t cover under any care option (you can find more information on exclusions below).

Cancer care
Our Cancer care option gives you wide-ranging treatment and support for a new cancer diagnosis that you receive after you join.

Receive chemotherapy at home if you wish, if your doctor thinks it’s appropriate.

Inpatient and day patient care
If you need to stay in hospital, even if it’s just for the day, this care option gives you access to our approved hospitals.
Have surgery or other inpatient care fast, in the comfort of a private hospital.
Have day patient tests or treatment.
Get the follow-up outpatient tests and treatment that your specialist says you need after hospital, including physiotherapy, even if you don’t have the Outpatient diagnosis and care.

[H5] Frequently asked questions

What is health insurance and how does it work?

Private health insurance, also referred to as private medical insurance, is an insurance policy which complements the NHS.
Anyone with health insurance can still use all the services offered by the NHS but you will also have access to private healthcare, which can often provide you with quick diagnosis and treatment (depending on your cover).
Private medical insurance may also provide access to specialist treatments, or cancer drugs that may not be available on the NHS (depending on the cover you choose).
You will usually pay a monthly subscription and you can claim for the costs of private healthcare you receive which is covered by your policy.

What are pre-existing conditions?

Most health insurance plans are designed to cover you for new and unforeseen medical issues and don’t cover treatment for conditions and symptoms you’re already suffering from when you join. These medical conditions are known as pre-existing conditions.

What are chronic conditions?

A health insurance policy may not cover incurable or long-term conditions, such as arthritis or diabetes. These conditions are called chronic conditions.
A chronic condition is a disease, illness or injury that has one or more of the following characteristics:
It needs ongoing or long-term monitoring through consultations, examinations, check-ups and/or tests.
It needs ongoing or long-term control or relief of symptoms.
It requires rehabilitation, or for you to be specially trained to cope with it.
It continues indefinitely.
It has no known cure.
It comes back or is likely to come back.

What does private health insurance cost in the UK?

The cost of health insurance can vary depending on factors such as your age, your location, your excess and the level of cover you choose. You can find out more on our cost of private health insurance page.

What is an excess?

Your excess is the amount you pay towards treatment if you make a claim. You can choose which level of excess you prefer, and it impacts the overall cost of your cover. If you choose a higher excess, your premiums would be less, but you’d have to pay more if you made a claim. If you have a lower excess, your monthly premiums would be higher, but you would pay less if you made a claim.

What is a premium?

Your premium, sometimes called a subscription, is what you pay for your health insurance cover. This is usually paid monthly or annually.

Do I need to have a medical before I take out health insurance?

No, a medical is not usually required to purchase health insurance. You simply provide your personal details and typically answer some health questions. If you have any pre-existing or chronic conditions, you should talk to your insurer before purchasing to be clear on what is and isn’t covered. You can find an explanation of pre-existing and chronic conditions within this FAQ.

How does our AXA Health Plan work?

The AXA Health Plan takes some of the worry out of accessing healthcare. It covers private treatment for new conditions, and includes access to our online private GP service.
You pay a monthly or yearly cost, and then if you become ill or develop a health issue, you can choose to use private healthcare, so long as it’s covered by your membership. You usually start off by seeing a GP – that can be an NHS GP or a private one. Then if you need to see a specialist, you can get in touch with us and we’ll walk you through what you’re covered for.
If you choose our Outpatient diagnosis and care option we can source or even book the appointment for you. If you choose an option that covers you for hospital treatment, this will usually be in a private hospital.

What does an AXA Health Plan cover?

Our AXA Health Plan covers private treatment for new medical conditions – it’s not designed to cover conditions you already have symptoms of when you join. The treatment that’s covered will depend on the cover you choose – we offer a range of options so you can select what matters to you. For example, you could choose to have cover for:
seeing a specialist for a diagnosis
inpatient or day patient treatment, including operations, in a private hospital
cancer treatment if you ever get a cancer diagnosis
help with mental health conditions

What does AXA health insurance not cover

As with most insurance, there are some things we don’t cover under any of the care options with our AXA Health Plan:
Chronic conditions
We don't cover treatment or monitoring of ongoing, recurring and long-term conditions (chronic conditions).
Pregnancy and childbirth
We don't cover pregnancy or childbirth.
Dental or optical treatment

What does AXA health insurance not cover

Chronic conditions
We don't cover treatment or monitoring of ongoing, recurring and long-term conditions (chronic conditions).

We don't cover pregnancy or childbirth.
Dental or optical treatment
We don't cover services that a dentist or optician would usually carry out.
We don't cover dental procedures.
Treatments, drugs and dressings
We don't cover fees for outpatient drugs, dressings and private prescriptions.
We don't cover services that a GP practice would usually carry out.
We don't cover preventative treatment or tests when there are no apparent symptoms.
We don’t cover therapeutic vaccines, even if it's recommended as part of your treatment.
We only cover treatment shown to be safe and effective by NICE, or by clinical trials that we recognise.
We only cover the approved Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Products (medicines based on genes or tissues) listed on our website.

What about conditions I already have when I join AXA Health?

Private health insurance covers private treatment for new medical conditions. It’s not designed to cover conditions you already have when you join. That includes conditions that start before you join, but which haven’t yet been diagnosed.
This means your cover for any conditions you already have when you join is limited, and we may not cover the condition at all. If you have symptoms now that you’re worried about, we probably won’t cover that condition if you join, even if you haven’t seen a doctor about it.
We’ll explain this cover before you buy, and you’ll see it on your membership certificate and handbook if you do buy.

[H3] Small business health insurance FAQs

How much does small business health insurance cost?

The cost of small business health insurance for your company will depend on a number of different factors, including the cover options you choose, the number of employees you want to cover on your plan, as well as their ages and your location. To give you an idea of how much small business health insurance could cost, we have put together some example plans here.

What do I need to get a business health insurance quote?

Get an indicative online quote for an SME business health insurance policy in minutes.
Here’s some information you’ll need:
Details such as your name, email address and business postcode
The number of employees you’ll be covering
The age of your employees (a rough estimate is fine for the indicative quote)
An idea of the cover options you would like to include (we will provide descriptions of each)
Once you have your indicative quote, one of our company healthcare plan experts will call you to discuss your cover needs, provide a full quote and explain how we cover existing medical conditions.

How does small business health insurance affect tax?

We've put together a dedicated page to explain how small business health insurance affects tax. You can read it here.

How can I get health insurance for my business?

If you'd like to buy small business health insurance, you can get a quote online or call our small business experts on 0808 303 1123*.

What is not covered under small business health insurance?

As with most healthcare cover, there are some elements your plan won't cover. The exclusions will depend on the options you choose but some of the most significant exclusions include:
Treatment of medical conditions your employees had, or had symptoms of, before they joined, unless you've chosen a 'continuing medical exclusions' or 'medical history disregarded' policy (available to businesses with 15+ employees)
Routine pregnancy and childbirth
Treatment of long-term, on-going or recurrent conditions (chronic) like diabetes or asthma
Cosmetic treatment
We'll run through the key exclusions when you talk to us about the plan you'd like. Full details of our cover and any exclusions or limitations will be provided when you join.

How do I make a claim?

This is how the claims process usually works:
Step 1: If your GP recommends you see a specialist, tell them that you want to go private and ask for an open referral - this is when your GP states that treatment is necessary and which type of specialist you require treatment from, but they do not specify a specialist's name (don't forget, members also have access to our online GP service who can also refer on to specialists).
Step 2: Call us so we can check your cover. You'll need an Outpatient option or our Diagnostics Only option for the consultation to be covered. We may also ask you to provide more information, for example from your GP.
Step 3: Our specialist appointment booking service will give you a choice of up to three specialists to get in touch with when you're ready, or can book an appointment for you. Using this service means that you won't end up paying for treatment that you're not covered for.

Can we extend cover to employees' family members?

It's easy to add employee family members to the plan at any point during your policy. The group administrator can call us on the phone number listed in the handbook (phone lines are open 9am-5pm Monday - Friday). Depending on the underwriting option chosen, the amendment to your policy can often be authorised over the phone. Once the amendment has been actioned, the family member will be added to your plan and can start receiving the benefits of your small business health insurance plan.

Your Diagnosis

Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.

Information Density 0 / 30
Read the Narrative & headings: do hard facts (prices, dates, numbers) outweigh fluff power-words?
Semantic Coherence 0 / 20
Compare the homepage promise against the sub-page reality. Do they hold the same line?
Trust & Proof 0 / 20
Weigh review mentions against actual external proof links. Claims without verification = theatre.
Commodity Fingerprint 0 / 15
Check headings & narrative against the industry clichés in the setup above.
Identity & Authority 0 / 15
Inspect the schema: is there real Organization/Person identity with sameAs links, or gaps?
Your predicted BS score 0 / 100
💡 Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)

These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.

Information Density

Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.

Semantic Alignment

Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.

Trust & Proof

Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.

Commodity Fingerprint

Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.

Identity & Authority

Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.

Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

25 BS / 100

AXA Health provides a masterclass in low-BS corporate communication by grounding every empathetic marketing claim in specific policy limitations and technical deliverables. It avoids ‘trust us’ fluff in favor of ‘here is what we cover’ substance. The site is a rare example where the depth of information on sub-pages actually exceeds the marketing promises of the homepage.

To achieve a minimal BS score below 15, the site should replace the generic ‘experienced team’ references with named medical leaders and link to their specific professional registrations. It should also provide a direct outbound link to the 2026 REBA report mentioned in the small business section. Finally, the internal 85% retention claim should be supported by a third-party audit or customer satisfaction survey link.

The site is an exact match for the Private Medical Insurance category. The terminology used, including moratorium, full medical underwriting, and outpatient diagnosis, confirms its alignment with UK-specific healthcare financial services.

“The score of 25 is driven largely by the use of generic industry slogans (Cover that Cares) and the lack of named individual authorities. Information density and semantic coherence performed exceptionally well, preventing a higher score. The technical implementation, particularly the rich schema.org data, reinforces the site's legitimacy.”
