Farm­gate Café in Cork city is a unique venue, pro­vid­ing a relaxed atmos­phere in Ireland’s old­est cov­ered food mar­ket, for over 25 years.We cre­ate menus that reflect the sea­son and our region. We source the fresh­est ingre­di­ents from the Food Stalls of the English Market, and work closely with trusted small-​scale mar­ket gar­den­ers, as well as the best arti­san food and wine pro­duc­ers we can find. Centuries old tra­di­tional, sea­sonal, regional, even ‘for­got­ten’ foods are at the core of the Farm­gate Café ethos, and also form a vis­i­ble link between the menu and the won­der­ful array of pro­duce down­stairs. This allows Farm­gate Café to pro­vide a uniquely Irish eat­ing expe­ri­ence both reflect­ing and (we hope) play­ing a small role in a vibrant Irish food cul­ture truly embrac­ing how good indige­nous ingre­di­ents and food prod­ucts are. Far­m­gate was estab­lished when Maróg O’Brien opened her restau­rant and coun­try store in Midle­ton, Co. Cork in 1984. Ten years later Maróg’s sis­ter Kay joined her, and so the Café in the Eng­lish Mar­ket in Cork city cen­tre was cre­ated. Far­m­gate Café is located in the heart of Ireland’s old­est and most his­toric food mar­ket, with an indus­tri­ous excit­ing view over­look­ing stalls and fel­low traders. The Café, which in 2019 cel­e­brated 25 years at the Eng­lish Mar­ket, embraces much of what is unique and tra­di­tional to Cork, along with new influ­ences in this dynamic mul­ti­cul­tural food mar­ket and port city.

For over 30 years, Far­m­gate Café has been at the heart of the Eng­lish Mar­ket, serv­ing locals and vis­i­tors alike with sim­ple, tra­di­tional food done excep­tion­ally well. The Mar­ket is their larder and they source from the traders below them. It is a place to gather, people-​watch, and enjoy the best local pro­duce and drinks. Opening Hours Market Stall (downstairs) Hours Open Monday to Thursday 09:30 - 16:00 Friday and Saturday 8:30 - 16:30 *Always closed on the Tuesday after bank holiday weekends. Farmgate Café (upstairs) Hours Monday: 12:00 – 15:00, lunch only (closed bank holidays). Tuesday to Friday: 09:00 – 15:30* Saturday: 08:30 - 16:00 Sunday: closed Breakfast: 09:00 – 11:15* Tea Coffee Cakes: 09:00 throughout the day Lunch: starts at 12:15 11:15 - 12:15 we serve our coffee & cake menu *On the Tuesday after a bank holiday we are not open for breakfast and open for lunch at 12:00 (for 12:15 orders). The phone is unattended on Sunday and Monday. Please keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram accounts for updates. INFOR­MA­TION FOR GUESTS The entrance to Far­m­gate Café is on the ground floor of the Eng­lish Mar­ket (via the Prince’s Street gate), oppo­site the Far­m­gate stall and beside the My Good­ness stall (see map below). Kindly note: The dou­ble stair­case towards the cen­tre of the Mar­ket is now for exit only. Small peo­ple are very wel­come: we pro­vide baby chairs, booster seats and we have a Children’s Menu (the main menu with smaller por­tions and smaller prices) We kindly ask that bug­gies are folded and stored while dining. Vouch­ers are avail­able to pur­chase here in the Café. Gra­tu­ities pol­icy. We do not add gra­tu­ities to your bill. All tips and gra­tu­ities received go directly to the Team, in line with the Pay­ment of Wages (Amend­ment) (Tips and Gra­tu­ities) Act 2022. Tips are shared by the Team – between front of house and kitchen, part-​time and full-​time, through a sys­tem con­trolled by staff representatives.
