Ted Drewes Frozen Custard [H1] A Legacy of Quality for Over 95 Years What started as a small business has grown into a cherished tradition, bringing families together for decades. Whether it’s a thick, creamy concrete or a perfectly chosen Christmas tree, Ted Drewes remains a symbol of quality, service, and community. [IMG: Ted Drewes Sr. standing in front of the Chippewa Street frozen custard stand in St. Louis, pointing at a concrete dessert, historic image highlighting the origins of the Ted Drewes tradition.] TED DREWES: HOW IT ALL BEGAN [H2] Historical Story [IMG: Black-and-white photo of the very first Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand in St. Petersburg, Florida. The small walk-up building, with its simple signage and classic 1920s style, represents the beginning of a tradition that would later become a St. Louis favorite. Customers can be seen gathered out front, enjoying frozen custard at the original location. Original Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand in St. Petersburg, Florida, 1929 – the first location before expanding to St. Louis] The story of Ted Drewes begins with Ted Drewes Sr., a tennis champion who dominated the Muny Tennis Championships from 1925 to 1936. He also won the National Public Parks Singles title four times during the 1920s. A native of St. Louis, Ted Sr. spent winters in Florida with his family to continue playing tennis. In the fall of 1929, he opened his first frozen custard stand in St. Petersburg, Florida. [IMG: Black-and-white photo of the very first Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand in St. Petersburg, Florida. Original Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand in St. Petersburg, Florida, 1929 – the first location before expanding to St. Louis] [IMG: Instructor at tennis court speaking with tennis students.] The story of Ted Drewes begins with Ted Drewes Sr., a tennis champion who dominated the Muny Tennis Championships from 1925 to 1936. He also won the National Public Parks Singles title four times during the 1920s. A native of St. Louis, Ted Sr. spent winters in Florida with his family to continue playing tennis. In the fall of 1929, he opened his first frozen custard stand in St. Petersburg, Florida. [IMG: Original Ted Drewes location on Natural Bridge Road.] [H3] Frozen Custard in St. Louis The St. Petersburg custard stand was such a success that Ted Sr. decided to bring the business back home to St. Louis. In the spring of 1930, he opened a brick-and-mortar store on Natural Bridge Road. The following year, he opened a second location on South Grand, which remains the oldest location still in operation today. Finally, in 1941, Ted Sr. opened the now-famous Chippewa location on Historic Route 66. [H3] Frozen Custard and Christmas Trees As one might imagine, frozen custard sales slow down during the winter months. In 1952, Ted Sr. began selling Christmas trees as a way to supplement the business’s income. A decade later, in 1962, Ted Jr. decided to cut out the middleman by purchasing land in Nova Scotia to grow his own trees. Each fall, Ted Jr. or his son-in-law, Travis, would travel to the tree farm to hand-select and harvest the finest Canadian Balsam Firs to bring back to St. Louis.Starting the day after Thanksgiving, we continue this tradition by offering a wide selection of Pine and Fir trees for sale through Christmas Eve. [IMG: Stacks of green Christmas trees at a tree farm ready for harvest.] [IMG: Ted Drewes Jr. holding a frozen custard concrete upside down, historic photo of the creation of the original concrete in St. Louis.] [H3] Home of the Original Concrete First introduced in 1959, the Concrete is a thick, creamy malt or shake that it’s famously served upside down. Importantly, this is a tradition that continues to this day. The legendary move began when a teenage customer, Steve Gamber, kept requesting the thickest malt the shop could make. Ted Jr. decided to leave out the milk, scooped the hard custard, and served it to Steve. When presenting his creation, Ted turned the custard upside down and said, “There, how’s that—thick enough?” [H3] Business Built on Service As demand for frozen custard grew, Ted Drewes Jr. elevated the business to new heights. In 1985, he expanded the Chippewa stand from five serving windows to twelve. While the expansion initially felt overwhelming, it proved essential as crowds continued to grow. Guided by the motto “Our Business Is Service,” Ted Jr. has inspired generations to prioritize quality, hospitality, and customer care. These details are what make a visit to Ted Drewes Frozen Custard an unforgettable experience. [IMG: Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand on Chippewa Street during renovation.] [IMG: Fourth generation Drewes family in front of the Chippewa Street Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand in St. Louis, historic family photo.] [H3] 4th Generation Family Business For nearly a century, Ted Drewes Frozen Custard has been the perfect way to cap off a day in St. Louis. Now in its fourth generation, the Drewes family continues to uphold their commitment to quality and customer service, ensuring that every visit feels special. Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

Food, Restaurants & Delivery BS: Ted Drewes Frozen Custard (teddrewes.com)
This is a high-substance, low-fluff legacy site that uses tradition as a shield against commodity marketing patterns. It suffers from minor technical ‘Need a Description’ rot, but its forensic evidence—names, dates, and proprietary product lore—backs 90% of its claims. The BS score is low because the business actually exists as a historical entity with a verifiable physical footprint.
First, replace the three instances of Need a Description in the menu beverage section with actual product details to eliminate the ‘template rot’ signal. Second, link the Voted World’s Best Ice Cream claim to a verifiable source or a dedicated ‘Awards’ section to move it from marketing air to proof. Third, integrate a live feed or direct links to third-party review platforms to resolve the trust theatre gap. Finally, add the official food hygiene rating and registration to the footer to meet modern proof expectations.
The site perfectly matches the Food and Restaurant category, specifically positioning itself as a legacy dessert institution. The content heavily emphasizes long-standing physical locations, specific menu ingredient combinations, and a 95-year operational history.
“The score of 20 reflects a high-authority business with a very small amount of marketing fluff. The Trust and Proof pillar (10 points) is the only area of minor concern due to unsubstantiated 'World's Best' claims and lack of review verification links. Information density is excellent, and semantic coherence is perfect.”
