Mincher-Lockett Opticians first opened its doors in 1969, founded by Jennifer and Peter Mincher-Lockett. [H5] Protecting the Eyes from an Early Age
Being able to see clearly is important for your child's development. Accurately interpreting the world around them, making new observations and having exciting learning experiences are vital to your child's education. When children are in their first few years, they experience developmental checks regularly to ensure that their eyes are not dramatically affected. Although thorough, those who carry out these checks are not qualified Optometrists – it is recommended that your child has a full eye test by a qualified Optometrist at around 3 years of age.

The sooner eye conditions are treated, the easier they are to treat and the better quality of life the child will have as they move into adulthood.

The health of your child's eyes is important to us too. Ensuring that your child gets regular eye examinations is important in detecting detrimental eye conditions early.
[H1] Symptoms to Look Out For
If your child does any of the following, we recommend you book an appointment for a child's eye test as soon as conveniently possible.

Straining eyes
Tilting head to get a better visual
Rubbing of the eyes
Looking closely at the television or a book
Not keeping up in regards to education at school
Closing one eye to read
Avoiding activities that requires strenuous visual activity

If one or both eyes appear to move in different or opposite directions
If your child complains of pain or discomfort when watching television or looking at a phone or tablet
If there's a white glow in your child's eyes when a photograph is taken. This looks similar to when you take a photograph and the pupils are red, but the glow is white. Whilst this may be a harmless effect of the flash, it can also be a sign of a rare form of eye cancer that affects babies and young children, predominantly under the age of 6. This is extremely rare and only effects approximately 50 children in the UK.

Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is a common eye condition where distant objects appear blurry, while close-up objects remain clear. This occurs when the eye's shape causes light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly (e.g., road signs or a classroom board)
Squinting to see better
Eye strain or headaches, especially after focusing on distant objects
Needing to sit closer to the television or front of the classroom

Myopia often begins in childhood and can progress as the child grows. Early detection is crucial, as uncorrected myopia can affect academic performance and social development. Regular eye examinations are essential, especially if there's a family history of the condition

Mincher-Lockett Opticians in Gnosall offers a comprehensive colorimetry assessment service designed to help individuals experiencing visual stress—a condition that can cause discomfort and difficulty when reading.

[H3] What’s Included in the Assessment
1. Full Eye Examination
The process begins with a thorough eye test to rule out any underlying visual issues.
2. Coloured Overlay Assessment
If visual stress is suspected, a coloured overlay assessment is conducted. This involves testing various coloured filters to determine which one best improves reading comfort and speed.
3. Trial Period with Overlays
Patients may be given a trial period to use the selected coloured overlay in daily reading activities to assess its effectiveness.
4. Precision-Tinted Spectacle Lenses
If the overlays prove beneficial, precision-tinted lenses can be custom-made. These lenses are dyed to a high degree of accuracy and can be fitted into your chosen frames with the assistance of their experienced dispensing team.
5. Ongoing Support
The team provides continued support to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments to the lenses or overlays.

Applied directly to the surface of the eye, contact lenses are a clear prescription lens that fits on the tear film layer of the surface of the cornea.

Similar to the way a standard lens in a pair of glasses will correct your eye sight, contact lenses are designed to suit your individual needs. They change the way the eye perceives the world and adjusts refracting light so that objects appear clearer.

A contact lens binds to the tear fluid in your eye, which allows it to move effortlessly with the eye's gaze.

Since 1991, contact lenses have grown in popularity year on year and offer the perfect solution for the individual who feels as though spectacles do not suit their lifestyle.

[H5] Types of Contact Lenses
Just as you can get different types of lenses for your glasses, you can also get different types of contact lenses. Each pair is designed to meet an individual's needs in different ways. Here are a few of the different types of contact lenses available:

Daily – a new pair of contact lenses for each day (not to be worn overnight)
Monthly – wearing one pair of lenses on a daily basis for up to a month
Continuous wear - wearing one pair of lenses for up to four weeks including overnight wear.
Specialist lenses - wearing one pair of tailor-made bespoke lenses for up to a year on a daily basis
Gas permeable - these are made of a specialist materials and can often give greater visual clarity
Spherical lenses – these have the same prescriptions throughout and help long and short sightedness
Toric lenses – these lenses help correct astigmatism
Multifocals – varifocal and trifocal contact lenses present lens prescriptions in different ways to suit the patient's needs
Coloured lenses - can be used to alter the colour of your eyes, these can be used for cosmetic reasons or just for fun!

[H5] Retinal Imaging
Retinal photography is extremely important in monitoring the evolution of a patient's eye health. As well as detecting eye conditions early, they provide historical data and comparison reports for each visit to the Opticians.

What diseases and eye conditions can retinal imaging detect?
​
​Age-related Macular Degeneration – the gradual deterioration of eye health due to ageing. This is a common eye condition that occurs in the majority of the population over a certain age.
​
Cancer – also known as melanoma, cancer of the eye can be detected early using retinal imaging, allowing early treatment to prevent spreading to other areas of the body. Without retinal imaging, this cancer can develop unnoticed.
[H5] Visual Field Tests
​Automated Perimetry – Using an advanced piece of technology, we are able to determine whether the patient has any blind spots. The machine is non-invasive and requires the patient to set their head on a rest and press a button when a flash of light can be seen.
​
Confrontation Visual Field Testing – In this test one eye is covered, whilst the other must fixate on a target object. The patient is then asked to describe what they are able to see in certain areas. If an eye condition is suspected then more visual field tests are required.
​
Amsler Visual Field Test – This test involves looking at a small grid with each eye in succession . It is for the central area of your vision and checks the health of your macula. It is useful for differentiating between different types of macula degeneration and also for checking for the side-effects of some medications.

[H5] Refraction Eye Tests
As part of your routine eye examination, you'll have a refraction eye test. Also known as a vision test, a refraction eye test plays a vital role in determining the health and visual capability of your eyes. 20/20 vision is a term that describes normal visual ability and a refraction eye examination determines how close or far away you are from achieving adequate 20/20 vision.
​
This test will enable the optometrist to determine whether the patient has a refractive error. This means that the light is not passing through the lens of the eye to be focussed at the retina as it should. A specially prescribed lens will correct this error and help towards attaining clearer vision for the client.
​

[H3] Clinical Eye Tests
Using specialist equipment, the Optometrist examines the interior and exterior of the patient's eye to check for any abnormalities that may require further investigation.

The Optometrist will be looking for a range of abnormalities that will determine whether or not the patient is developing an eye condition. For example, a clinical eye test is the best way of detecting early signs of glaucoma, which can cause partial and full loss of sight.

​A clinical eye test uses a range of techniques to help determine the health of a patient's eye. As well as using manual techniques, the Optometrist will also use machinery to gain a broad understanding of eye health.
