Many people suffer with headaches at some point in their life, there are a variety of reasons for your headaches and most of these are not serious. Once the causes of your headache has been established, they can often be helped. The most common sources of headaches are:

Tension in the Muscles of the face, head, neck and jaw

Vasodilation of blood vessels in the brain and meninges surrounding the brain which causes increased pressure within the cranium

Neuronal headaches

Inflammation origin headache from the head, neck or sinuses

If you are suffering from headaches an appointment may help to ease your symptoms. During your appointment your practitioner will take a detailed case history, asking many questions, some of which may seem irrelevant to you. These questions are necessary to decide whether treatment is appropriate or whether onwards referral may be needed. For the best relief of headaches we recommend you combine manual therapy such as osteopathy or physiotherapy, acupuncture and nutritional therapy. We may also recommend Botox injections if your headache symptoms persist more than 15 days amonth.Osteopaths and physios have many treatment approaches which may help ease the symptoms of your headaches, which include soft tissue massage, stretching, manipulations of the neck and upper spinal joints, lymphatic drainage techniques, acupuncture, or trigger point therapy.There are also many diet and lifestyle causes that can cause headaches such as blood sugar imbalances, poor dietary choices and a lack of certain vitamins and minerals. [H2] Types of headaches we can help with

Tension type headaches

These are the most common type of headache. Usually they are a diffuse headache of mild to moderate severity, which is often described as feeling a tight band around your head and behind the eyes.These types of headaches are caused by tension in the muscle of the head, face and jaw in response to stress, tension, illness or poor sleep. Treatment is aimed at relaing muscle tension and includes manual therapy such as osteopathy, acupuncture and relaxing Swedish massage. Making changes in your lifestyle to reduce stress can also help. We can also perform Botox injetions to relieve these tension headaches by relaxing muscles in the head, face and neck.

Migraine

Migraines is another common type of headache causing a moderate to severe throbbing pain on one side of the head. Many people also have symptoms such as feeling sick, being sick, and increased sensitivity to light or sound.There are many types of treatment for migraines including the use of certain medications; osteopathy, massage or acupuncture and nutrition such as balancing blood sugar levels and identifying and avoiding trigger foods. Using certain supplements have also been shown to be useful for managing migraines. Botox may also be used to relieve any muscle tension with these types of headache. Cervicogenic headache

A cervicogenic headache is a pain that develops in the neck but is felt as a pain in the head. These headaches usually start in the neck or back of the head and radiate towards the front of the head and around the eyes. People who experience these usually also have neck pain or stiffness and certain neck movements can aggravate the pain.These headaches, like tension haedaches are cause by muscle tension, and are very common in people who have sedentary jobs, especially those who work on laptops or work from home. Manual tretament such as physiotherapy or osteopathy, massage and acupuncture in to the neck can be very useful in managing these headaches. It is also important to set your work station correctly and do exercises for and be aware of good posture.

Sinus headache

Sinus headaches can be caused by, or feel like an infection within the sinus. You may feel pressure around your eyes, cheeks, or forehead, as well as the pain worsening when bending forward of laying down.These types of headaches can be managed with certain medication to help clear the sinuses, as well a manual treatment and acupuncture around the face and head. Exploring causes for your sinus pain including what may cause blockages in the sinuses is also warranted. Removing trigger foods and food chemicals from your diet and improving your nutrition may also help with sinus headaches.

Cluster headache

Cluster headaches are usually described as a unilateral headache behind the eye and are believed to be caused by inflammation of the trigeminal nerve, and may also be associated with lacrimation and nasal drip.These headaches feel like they are coming from deep within the head from behind the eyes. They are neural in origin, and using anti-inflammatory treatments such as NSAID’s as well as natural anti-inflammatory treatments such as curcumin and omega 3 may help.

Hormonal headache

Headaches and migraines have a higher frequency in women. One theory is these hormoal headaches take place when oestrogen and progesterone are low in the luteal phase or around day 1 to 4 of the menstrual cycle. Using phytoestrogens to mitigate the rapid decline in fluctuating oestrogen in women who suffer hormonal headaches and migraines may be useful.

Get adequate sleep, manage stress and remain well hydrated each day

Take paracetamol or sumatriptan for a migraine

Massage peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil (or a combination of both) into the forehead and temples as these stimulate sensory nerve where applied that can act as a temporary pain killer

Seek out some manual therapy and / or acupuncture

For migraine, tension and cervicogenic headaches consider Botox treatment

For sinus, cluster, hormonal headache and migraine consider a nutritional therapy appointment

By making a booking with Wandsworth Physiotherapy (the “Provider”), you (“the Client”) acknowledge and agree that you have read, understood, and accepted the terms set out in this Appointment Booking Disclaimer and Policy. This information supersedes any other communications and governs all appointments booked with us.
[H3] Practitioner Registration and Qualifications
All physiotherapists, podiatrists, and osteopaths practicing at our clinics in Wandsworth Town (SW18), Clapham Junction (SW11), and Battersea Nine Elms (SW8) are registered with their respective professional regulatory bodies: the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), or the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Massage therapists are trained and insured but are not registered with a governing body, as massage therapy is not a protected title.

Our therapists accept patients covered by BUPA (80011520), Cigna, WPA, Healix, Allianz, and Exeter Friendly. Some therapists also accept AXA, Aviva or HMCL referrals.We do not accept patients using Vitality insurance.The Provider is not liable for any errors or miscommunications between insurer, Client, and Provider regarding insurance coverage or therapist recognition. All therapists are professionally registered and legally entitled to practise; insurance coverage is subject to insurer policies and network limitations, which are the Client’s responsibility to verify with their insurer.This information is provided by our reception team and is believed accurate; however, it is solely the Client’s responsibility to confirm their insurance coverage, therapist selection, authorisation code and which body part this relates to, session limits, and excess payments with their insurer before booking.One authorisation code relates to one body part. The Provider will not treat unauthorised body parts at the Client’s discretion or provide maintenance treatments using an insurance authorisation code. If the Client requires treatment for an additional body part, it is the Client’s responsibility to obtain insurance authorisation, and the Provider is not liable for any incorrect information provided by the Client. The Client will remain liable for all consequences and charges related to unauthorised treatment provided by the Provider delivered in good faith.  Clients must obtain insurance authorisation prior to booking. Failure to do so will make the Client personally liable for full treatment costs without exception.All appointments booked and paid for before insurance details are provided constitute a direct contract between the Client and Provider; fees paid are strictly non-refundable.Clients must provide insurance membership numbers, authorisation codes, number of authorised sessions, and any policy excess payable directly to the Provider at the time of booking. Due to GDPR, insurers do not provide these details to us.Clients remain fully responsible for all treatment costs, including any shortfall, excess, or non-payment by insurers. Cancellation fees are the Client’s responsibility and are not covered by insurance.
[H3] Payments and Booking
Payments or insurance details must be provided at the time of booking the initial appointment for a new episode of care.Payments are taken via debit/credit card using Timely Pay. Subsequent appointments are pre-charged 24 hours before the session.We do not accept “top-up” or prepaid cards. If a payment cannot be processed due to insufficient funds, the appointment will be cancelled, and the Client will be restricted from booking until outstanding balances are settled and valid payment details are provided.
[H3] Appointments – What You Need to Know
We want your appointment to run smoothly and on time. To help us do that, please note the following:Whether you book online or by phone, you are responsible for choosing the correct appointment type. If you’re unsure, our reception team is happy to guide you before you book.Please aim to arrive promptly. If you arrive late, we may need to shorten your treatment time to stay on schedule, but the full fee will still apply.Once you’re within the 24-hour cancellation window and especially once your appointment has started, we cannot shorten the booking or refund unused time.Insurance appointments last 30 minutes. Self-funding appointments may be 30 or 60 minutes, as chosen.Treatment time includes face-to-face care and essential behind-the-scenes tasks such as note-taking, referral letter preparation, and exercise programme design, which are part of the booked session.Therapists cannot provide care or work for you or on your episode of care outside of the booked session time, so please take this into account during your appointment and regarding how much time was spent with you face to face.
[H3] Cancellation Policy
Clients must provide at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Any online bookings or pre-paid appointments cancelled outside of the 24 hour period will be refunded subject to a 1.9% administration fee, refunds are processed by Stripe and can take up to 10 working days (Stripe’s T’s and C’s) to appear in your account.Cancelling with less than 24 hours’ notice or failing to attend will result in a full session charge, which is non-refundable. The Provider reserves the right to charge this fee to the Client’s stored payment method.
[H3] Consent and Client Responsibilities
By booking, the Client consents to treatment by any qualified practitioner at the Provider and understands that treatment outcomes vary with no guarantees.The Client agrees to follow the advice and treatment plans provided for optimal outcomes.The Client consents to the use of anonymised voice-to-text AI transcription for appointment notes, which are deleted after 30 days.The Client must provide accurate personal information and must not book using another person’s details, except where booking as a parent or legal guardian for a child under 16. Use of another person’s information absolves the Provider from liability related to any charges.
[H3] Liability and Disclaimers
The Provider is not liable for any worsening of symptoms or treatment failures absent negligence.The Provider is not responsible for any shortfall or rejection of claims by insurers or for any reimbursement delays or denials.Cash-back plan receipts are available upon request, but reimbursement depends solely on the insurer’s policies. The Provider is not liable for any dispute between Client and insurer.

This policy and your signed consent form governs all appointments and supersedes any other agreements or communications you may have received regarding bookings, using medical insurance, cancellations, or payments.By proceeding with a booking, the Client confirms they have read, understood, and agreed to these terms in full and will sign an agreement form to this effect prior to commencing their initial appointment with the Provider. The Client understands that these terms remain in place for any and all subsequent appointments the Client books with the Provider.

What are Physiotherapy and Osteopathy?

Physiotherapy and Osteopathy are disciplines involving hands-on treatment of injuries and the prescription of rehabilitation exercises to help people overcome their pain and dysfunction. Our clinic across Wandsworth, South West London are here to get you back to what you love doing.

What sort of problems do you treat?

Physiotherapists and Osteopaths are trained to treat problems of the musculo-skeletal system – this means pain and injuries to your muscles, ligaments, joints and tendons. This includes injuries like back pain, and neck and shoulder pain; sports injuries like knee injuries, ankle and Achilles pain and tendonitis; hand and finger injuries and pain and dysfunction experienced during pregnancy such as pelvic girdle pain and sciatica. Physiotherapists also treat people after broken bones and surgery and guide people through their rehabilitation and get them back to full function.

Do I need a GP referral before I visit?

No, you can refer yourself to see a Physiotherapist or Osteopath across our clinics in SW18, SW11 or SW8 and pay for the treatment yourself. If you intend to use medical insurance you might need a GP referral first, or some insurance companies offer triage calls. A triage call is where you speak to a physio or nurse over the phone before being referred to us.

Why shouldn’t I just go to the NHS as that’s free?

You can do this, however to get access to NHS physiotherapy you will first need to see your GP. This could take 2-3 weeks just to get your appointment with the GP. Once the GP has referred you to NHS physiotherapy you could be waiting 2 or 3 months on the waiting list.

So I’ve decided to visit Wandsworth Physiotherapy – what’s the process?

How quickly can I be seen?

We aim to offer you an appointments across all our clinic in Wandsworth within 24 hours of you contacting us. All you need to do is call our reception team on 020 4586 5532. You can also book online where you can select a day and a time that suits you best.

Do I need to take a day off work?

No, don’t worry, unlike the NHS physio department we are not just open Mon-Fri 9-5pm. We offer evening and weekend appointments as well as day time appointments.

Do I need a chaperone?

We request that all children U16 are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Adults do not require a chaperone unless you feel you would prefer to bring one with you. We cannot provide trained chaperones. If you would prefer to only see a male or female therapist please select the therapist you would prefer to see when booking online, or speak with our reception team who will assist you.

Can I book an injection?

To receive an injection at Wandsworth Physiotherapy, you first need to be assessed and have undergone an ultrasound scan or other imaging. If an injection is recommended your therapist will discuss this with you. Ultrasound guided injections are available at all of our clinics in Wandsworth Town, Clapham Junction and Battersea Nine Elms.

How long are the appointments?

Most appointments are 30 minutes. Your treatment time may be less than 30 minutes as your therapist may need to spend time writing notes, referrals and preparing home exercises etc. These essential behind the scenes tasks are part of your appointment and may not be performed face to face.30 minutes is sufficient time for a skilled and experienced therapist to assess, diagnose, treatment plan and treat your problem. However, if you have multiple unrelated areas to discuss (a shoulder and a knee for example) we can either book an hour and manage both of these for you, or stick to 30 minutes and just manage the most pressing concern. If you woule prefer more time you are more than welcome to book and hour.

What happens in the first session?

In an initial appointment you will be asked to explain your injury, how it happened, how long you have had it and how it makes you feel. You will be asked to set some goals about what you want to achieve from your time spent with at Wandsworth Physiotherapy and Osteopathy.Your therapist will also run through your past medical history finding out about any medical diagnoses or medicine that you take.Next your therapist will carry out a physical examination looking at the affected area plus carry out an assessment of your posture and how you move. Once they have carried out this assessment they will put together a treatment plan for you.In the remaining time of your initial assessment and on subsequent treatment sessions they will carry out this treatment plan and also give you home exercises to do to either resolve your problem or to give you a management strategy to keep your symptoms under control.

Do I get treatment during my first session?

Yes, your Physiotherapist and Osteopath are medically and legally obliged to ask you questions about your medical history, assess your problem and design a treatment plan. Once this has been carried out you will receive treatment. However, if you are using HCML or IPRS medical insurance your first appointment is an assessment only and treatment usually begins on your next appointment.

Will I be in pain after my first treatment?

Physiotherapy, Osteopathy and Massage are hands-on treatments where we manipulate joints and massage soft tissues – you can feel a bit stiff and sore afterwards. We do try hard to judge how severe your pain is a tailor our treatment to reflect this. We certainly don’t want to make you feel worse.

Can I use my medical insurance for physio treatment?

Yes, at Wandsworth Physiotherapy and Osteopathy we treat people from most insurance groups. Alternatively, you can cover the costs of the treatment yourself, and we can provide receipts for you to claim back the cost of your treatment from your insurance company or if you use a cash plan.All our therapists treat patients covered by BUPA (80011520), Aviva, Cigna, WPA, Healix, Allianz and Exeter Friendly. Some therapists accept AXA referrals but check with us before booking. Please get authorisation from your insurer BEFORE booking an appointment with us or you will be liable for, and required to pay the full cost of your appointment. We can issue you a receipt to claim back our fee from your insurer. However we are not liable for, and will not reimburse you for any shortfall in what your insurer subsequently reimburses you.We do not see people using Vitality or through the Nuffield Health network.

Is my therapist registered and insured?

Yes, to practice as a Physiotherapist you must be HCPC registered. CSP registration is optional but provides public liability insurance. Similarly an Osteopath must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

Do you provide acupuncture? Does it cost extra?

Yes, all physios at Wandsworth Physiotherapy are trained in acupuncture. Acupuncture treatment does not cost any extra than the cost of the session.

Will I get a home exercise programme?

Yes, we will design you an exercise programme and e-mail it to you. The system we use is very user friendly and has pictures, videos and descriptions of what to do – there are no stick diagrams or just showing you the exercises once, which you later forget. You can access you exercise programme on a smart phone, tablet or PC / Mac.

Do you offer Pilates for back pain?

We also offer 1:1 clinical Pilates in our Wandsworth Clinic for those suffering back pain. We also offer small group classes, please speak to your therapist to see if you are ready for a class setting.

Do you treat children's injuries?

Yes, at Wandsworth Physiotherapy and Osteopathy we have treated children as young as 8 years old for minor sports related injury. We require a chaperone to be present for any patient under 16 years of age.

If I have sustained an injury when is the best time to come and see us?

Straight away. If you have sustained a sports injury and you decide it is not serious enough to go to A and E you can make an appointment with a physio. They can assess the problem, give you a diagnosis of what you have done and provide you with some acute injury treatment and advice. Early management of an injury leads to better outcomes.

Can I book and manage my appointment online?

Yes, you can book, change and cancel appointments online. However, please note we have a 24-hour cancellation policy. In order to avoid being invoiced for your treatment please give us more than 24-hours notice if you need to change or cancel an appointment.

Do I have to take my clothes off to have physiotherapy or osteopathy?

No, we don’t want you to feel uncomfortable. We might need you to roll your trousers up to see your knee or lift your t-shirt up so we can see you back for example. However, it does make our job easier if you are prepared to undress a little.

What do I need to wear?

Please bring shorts and for ladies wear a sports bra or vest top.

How can I pay?

You can pay for treatment by debit/credit card on the phone when making your appointment. We can issue you a receipt for cash back plans. Alternatively you can book and pay online.

When do I need to pay for my treatments?

You will need to pay for each session in advance. We can give you receipts if you need them for a cash back scheme.

How do I get to the clinic?

We have three locations at Wandsworth Physiotherapy and Osteopathy. Wandsworth Town: 338 Old York Road, Wandsworth, London SW18 1SS, 50m from Wandsworth Town Train Station. Wandsworth Town is one stop from Clapham Junction. Buses that pass the area include number 28 and 44, however Old York Road has also been pedestrianised so buses no longer travel down the street. There is on street parking around the Tonsleys after 4:30pm Mon-Fri and on the weekend. Clapham Junction: Inside MyHealthCare Clinic, 19 St John’s Road, SW11 1QN 50m from Clapham Junction Station. Will I need ongoing treatment?

Our philosophy is to get you better in as few sessions as possible, help you self-manage your problem and get your back to your sporting passion. Most spinal and sports injuries can be dealt with in 4 or 5 sessions.If we are not helping at this point you will be referred to one of our consultant surgeon associates for a second opinion. Of course, if you are having physio post-surgery or post fracture, or for a chronic injury you will require more Physiotherapy or Osteopathy sessions. You can discuss your treatment plan with your therapist.

How long does it take to see results from treatment?

This is much harder to answer. Some people get better in just 2 or 3 sessions over the course of a week or two, others need as many as 8 or 9 treatments over the course of 2 or 3 months. Generally, the more severe the damage, the longer it will take.For example, if you are recovering from surgery or a fracture it might take longer than 6 months before you are better. If you have just woke up with a stiff neck it might take 2 weeks. After your assessment the physio will explain how long they think it will take to get your injury better.

Do you offer shockwave therapy in Wandsworth?

Yes. Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is available at our Wandsworth Town clinic on Old York Road, SW18. We offer both focused shockwave and radial pressure wave. Colloquially known as shockwave therapy, they are a clinically evidenced treatment used for persistent tendon pain including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, calcific tendinitis of the shoulder and gluteal tendinopathy. Treatment is delivered by our HCPC-registered physiotherapists. You do not need a GP referral to book, but we encourage you to speak to your therapist to see which type of shockwave suits you best.

Do you offer diagnostic ultrasound scanning in Wandsworth?

Yes. Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound scanning is available at our Wandsworth Town, Clapham Junction and Battersea Nine Elms clinics. Ultrasound imaging allows our therapists to assess soft tissue structures including muscles, tendons, ligaments and bursae in real time. It is commonly used to investigate shoulder pain, Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, and other musculoskeletal conditions where imaging is needed to confirm a diagnosis before treatment or injection.

Do you treat running injuries?

Yes. We have a dedicated Running Injury Clinic at Wandsworth Physiotherapy and Osteopathy, serving runners across SW18, SW11, SW8, and the wider Southwest London area. Our physiotherapists and osteopaths assess and treat a wide range of running-related injuries including ITB syndrome, patella tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, shin splints, and stress fractures. Assessment includes a clinical examination and where appropriate gait analysis or an ultrasound scan to understand the factors contributing to your injury.

Do you provide ultrasound guided injections and what are they used for?

Yes. Ultrasound guided injections are available at all three of our clinics in Wandsworth Town, Clapham Junction, and Battersea Nine Elms. We offer corticosteroid injections, PRP, hyaluronic acid and Arthrosamid® knee injections. Injections are guided in real time using diagnostic ultrasound to ensure precise needle placement. To receive an injection, you first need to be assessed and have had relevant imaging – your therapist will advise whether an injection is appropriate for your condition.

What is an Arthrosamid injection and do you offer it in Wandsworth?

Yes. Arthrosamid® is a polyacrylamide hydrogel injection used for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It works by reducing inflammation in the knee joint and has been shown in clinical studies to provide sustained pain relief. Arthrosamid injections are available at our Wandsworth Town clinic on Old York Road, SW18, our Clapham Junction Clinic, SW11 and our Battersea Nine Elms Clinic, SW8. They are administered under ultrasound guidance by our experienced clinicians. A clinical assessment is required before treatment.

Do you treat sports injuries in Southwest London?
