SUB-PAGE (https://profilebooks.com/about-profile-books/) About Profile Books – Profile Books
[H2] About Profile Books Profile Books was founded on April Fool’s Day in 1996 by Andrew Franklin and Stephen Brough to publish stimulating non-fiction in a wide range of fields. Looking for inventive books, powerful voices and lively thought, early bestsellers included Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss (more than 3 million copies sold worldwide) and the New Scientist ‘Last Word’ series, which sold over 2.5 million copies. We are a lifelong home for authors and create books that surprise, delight and endure. Bestselling authors include Mary Beard, Oliver Bullough, Alan Bennett, Margaret MacMillan, Francis Fukuyama, Shaun Bythell, Robert Greene, Ryan Holiday, Shoshana Zuboff and Eugenia Cheng. Since its beginning, Profile has published books under the Economist Books imprint, in association with The Economist. The annual Pocket World in Figures is approaching its thirtieth edition and has sold over three million copies. Recent titles range from the Christmas bestseller Unconventional Wisdom to Philip Coggan’s world economic history More. In 2002 the company acquired the HarperCollins UK business list, including classics such as In Search Of Excellence and What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School. Founded by Pete Ayrton in 1986, Serpent’s Tail became an imprint of Profile in 2007. It publishes highly distinctive, award-winning international fiction such as Sarah Perry’s The Essex Serpent, Karen Joy Fowler’s Man Booker Prize shortlisted We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, Torrey Peters’ Women’s Prize longlisted Detransition, Baby and books by Mary Gaitskill, Esi Edugyan, Jami Attenberg, Alain Mabanckou, Attica Locke and Carmen Maria Machado. The Serpent’s Tail Classics includes titles by Walter Mosley, Chester Himes, Langston Hughes, Elfriede Jelinek, Eileen Myles and David Peace. Viper Books, a crime imprint, was added in 2019, with its first title A Famished Heart by Nicola White published in February 2020. In 2012, Profile launched a new list with Wellcome Collection, designed to showcase brilliant writing about science, health, medicine and human experience. Notable successes include Forensics by Val McDermid, Being Mortal by Atul Gawande and Adventures in Human Being by Gavin Francis, all of which were Sunday Times bestsellers, as well as books by Elif Shafak, Susie Orbach, Adam Kucharski, Iain Sinclair, Joanna Cannon and Tiffany Watt Smith. Since 2014, we have published a boutique list Tuskar Rock, selected by Colm Tóibín and Peter Straus. In 2015, Seiobo There Below by László Krasznahorkai, won the Man Booker International Prize and Chris Kraus’ cult book I Love Dick became a bestseller almost twenty years after it was first published. Profile took on Souvenir Press in 2018 following the death of its legendary founder, Ernest Hecht. He had run the company for a record sixty-seven years. Souvenir has a wide-ranging backlist of around 500 titles and is especially strong in psychology, expert advice, health and creativity. Bestsellers include the multimillion selling The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, HypnoBirthing by Marie Mongan, She Comes First by Ian Kerner and Cribsheet by Emily Oster. Profile Editions (formerly Third Millennium Publishing), a publisher specialising in highly illustrated histories of companies, organisations and schools, joined Profile in 2015. Notable titles include histories of the University of Cambridge, The Royal College of Physicians, The New School, New York, an illustrated history of the Women’s Institute and the Man Booker Prize diary. Profile Books has won Independent Publisher of the Year awards at the British Book Awards four times. In 2024, Murdle won the Non-Fiction: Lifestyle and Illustrated category as well as overall Book of the Year. It was also Waterstones Gift of the Year. When Profile started there were three people, now there are sixty in the company and we publish around 100 new books a year. Twenty-eight years on and our mission is unchanged: to be a fearless publisher of a diverse range of distinctive books, of the highest quality, written by the best authors in their field, and to remain a beacon of independent publishing. Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.
Based on 831 businesses audited.
Profile Books has 18.7 points less BS than the average for Media, News & Publishing.
Media, News & Publishing BS: Profile Books (profilebooks.com)
This is a rare example of a ‘Zero-BS’ corporate site. It functions as a functional repository for a publishing house where the substance of the titles and authors completely replaces the need for marketing fluff. The site relies on the inherent authority of its catalog rather than the persuasive power of its adjectives.
Integrate Person schema for featured authors to connect their digital footprints directly to the site’s structured data. Explicitly link the ‘review_count’ to a third-party verified platform to move from internal data to external proof. Add a specific page for ‘Editorial Standards’ to satisfy the industry expectations for news and publishing transparency. Update the homepage schema to include more SameAs links to official social media or industry directory profiles.
The site is a precise match for the publishing industry, specifically focusing on non-fiction and independent literature. The content provides a direct catalog of products (books) and creators (authors) which aligns with the Media and Publishing classification.
“The score of 16 is one of the lowest possible for a commercial entity. Minor points were lost only for lack of granular Person schema and some generic template language in the footer/navigation, but the core content is almost entirely substantive.”
This training module utilizes a snapshot of public data from Profile Books, captured on May 24, 2026, to demonstrate how machine logic evaluates different types of business narratives.
Purpose: This data is presented under “Fair Use” / “Educational Exception” for the purpose of forensic semantic analysis, allowing users to compare human intuition against machine-generated evaluations.
Notice to Profile Books: This analysis is part of a non-adversarial audit conducted by 1 Euro SEO. The results provided by 1EuroSEO are intended as professional feedback to help improve any website’s machine-readability and authority signals. The 1EuroSEO BS Detection Tool is a free tool, and anyone can test any company to see how their content is interpreted by AI models.
Any company can use the insights for free and improve its voice by comparing it to industry clichés or competitors. When a company has updated its content, it can always submit a new audit request, which will be reflected in a new current score.
To all users: You are encouraged to visit the live site at https://profilebooks.com to view the most current version of its content and learn from the source what this company is about and what it offers.
