Why can I help with your dating? I’ve been there! Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time online dating (beginning in pre-online dating days with Guardian Soulmates way back in the 90s when you had to phone in your message!) I think it’s a fantastic way to meet new people, but I also know it can be challenging, time-consuming, and sometimes make you want to give up dating altogether.After plenty of nice-enough dates but not meeting anyone who really made my heart skip. And after swiping through A LOT of tiger-stroking, sunglasses-wearing, selfie-in-toilets photos, I thought ‘there’s got to be a better way of doing this’ and ‘someone should help people take better photos’ and then…. ‘oh, me!!’I did a mountain of research on what made a great dating photo and then began offering high quality, on-location dating portrait shoots using up-to-date statistics, a little visual psychology and my expertise as a portrait photographer. It was a revelation. People I photographed literally went from being on dating sites for months and months, to meeting a ‘keeper’ in the weeks after their dating session with me. I have even photographed a wedding resulting from one of those dating shoots! And for me? I used my research, took new photos and re-wrote my profile in an intentional, engaging way. I went from just one or two messages a week to ten or more messages a day. Four weeks later I had a great date with a wonderful, funny, like-minded man and a year later I married him. We met on Tinder. ❤️

I’ve been a dating photographer for over a decade.I trained as a fine artist, specialising in painted portraits — photographing people felt like the most natural next step. I’ve been a portrait photographer since the late ‘90s, launching my first photography business, Lucy Williams Photography, in 2002.In 2010, I founded My Heart Skipped as a fine art wedding photography business, whilst photographing dating portraits informally for my single friends. [H2] what’s the difference between non-professional and professional photos?
Professional photos are usually high quality and are bright, well-exposed and well-composed so they visually appeal to people and attract the eye. However, as much as it’s about the photo it’s also about the photographer. A professional photographer is 100% dedicated to taking the best shots of you, they’ll have techniques to help you feel natural, at ease, and confident in front of the camera. They will consider every aspect of the photo from lighting and framing to background, how your clothes look, how you appear in the photo, as well as giving you a wide selection of images from headshots to full length. Some professional photographers, like me, are also fascinated by visual language and dating psychology and will weave that into a personalised service for you.Besides expert photography, my skill is in creating a connection with the people in front of my lens and I love it when I can bring out and capture what is unique, attractive and captivating about you.

[H2] do i need to book in advance?
Yes! Photo sessions get booked up very quickly, especially over weekends and holidays. On booking I’ll ask you to make full payment to ensure your date and time are firmly in place.

[H2] Are you available on weekdays and weekends?
I generally book photo sessions on weekdays and have a limited number of sessions available on select weekends too.

[H2] which package should i book?
I’d recommend booking REFRESH if you are looking for 1 or 2 photos to enhance your dating profile or if you have limited time. If you’d like a full set of photos with loads of variety of outfits and backgrounds then CREATE is for you. If you’d like a complete profile re-do, choose ENHANCE or ELEVATE. More details on sessions and pricing.
[H2] how many photos do i get?
Each photo session includes a small number of digital images - from 3 images (REFRESH) to 10 images (ELEVATE). Perfect for dating apps, whether you want one or two eye-catching headshots or a scroll-stopping set with more variety. For people who like to swap photos in and out, regularly change their profiles, or just like to have more lovely photos it’s possible to buy additional shots to compliment your included images.
[H2] How many photos do i need?
You’ll want 5 to 6 great photos of you to use on your dating profile. Statistics suggest that six photos give a good overall ‘feel’ for who you are - people will have decided whether they want to get to know you within this range. Many apps, like Hinge and Tinder, limit you to 6 photos - my aim is to give you a small set of high-quality photos that attract the right people.
[H2] WHAT IF I’D LIKE MORE PHOTOS?
Many clients value having additional photos. It’s possible to purchase individual images or ‘Image Bundles’. A wider selection of photos offers options to swap photos around on your profile (and boost dating app algorithms), use different photos across a variety of dating sites, or just to have more images of yourself that you love.
[H2] How can i see the photos after my session?
After your photo session (within a few days), I’ll upload a wide selection of your photos in a password-protected online gallery for you to view. From there you’ll are able to choose your favourite images and download your final photos when they are ready.

[H2] How LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY SELECTED PHOTOS?
I upload images from your session within a week and typical turnaround for your finished images is 10-14 working days from me receiving your chosen selections.
[H2] DO you EDIT AND retouch the photos?
The images you select are hand-edited for perfect exposure, brightness, contrast and white balance, and carefully retouched to remove anything impermanent (like spots, stains on clothes, loose threads etc). I believe that it’s important for you to look true to yourself in photos for dating so I rarely do any intensive retouching.

[H1] LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

[H2] WHERE in the uk are you & CAN YOU COME TO ME?
Dating portrait sessions take place in Central London, Bristol and Bath, generally within walking distance of a central mainline train station.I can also travel to you in your home or preferred location from my base in Wiltshire. I travel to most areas from the North to the South of the UK, between the Midlands, Oxfordshire, Greater London and the South West.  Travel costs for journey time, public transport/ petrol and expenses are in addition. Let me know if you’d like to book a dating photo session in your area.
[H2] WHERE DO THE SHOOTS TAKE PLACE?
I have a selection of tried and tested routes with well-researched options for great light and photogenic compositions, diverse scenes and backdrops, quieter spots with fewer people, and places to change outfits along the route. Most of my routes are near mainline stations and are easy to get to on public transport, and have ample nearby parking.
[H2] ARE THE SHOOTS INDOORS OR OUTDOORS?
Always outdoors using natural light.

[H2] WHAT ABOUT THE WEATHER?
I’ll keep a close eye on the weather nearer your shoot date. Full sunshine isn’t required for your session and sometimes cloudy days give the most beautiful flattering light. However, if the day is looking very rainy or windy, or particularly hot or cold, or I may ask to rearrange your session.
[H2] AS THE SHOOTS ARE ON LOCATION, where do i get changed?
Usually we’ll be shooting near at least one lovely cafe or bar, I’ll ask you to use their washrooms, or a public bathroom, for outfit changes.
[H2] I REALLY WANT AN INDOORS SHOOT, IS THAT POSSIBLE?
You are welcome to book an interior location if you'd like photos somewhere specific. I'll happily accommodate locations very near my usual routes, or I can put together a custom quote for you for time and travel to custom locations, or to recce, find, and book a location for you.

[H1] PLANNING & PREP

[H2] what should i wear?
Think first date. Your photos will be the first time your potential date sees you so it’s important to wear clothes that reflect your best self, whether smart or casual. Before your shoot I’ll send over my ‘Outfit and Shoot Prep Guide PDF’ with more details on what to wear and what to avoid. If you’d like me to help choose your outfits I also offer an Outfit Guidance consultation service.
[H2] How many outfits shall i bring?
We’ll work with as many looks as we can in your booked time. Typically we’ll cover 3 ‘bottom-half’ changes (trousers/ skirts, dresses) and a variety of tops in a two hour photo session. ‘Mixing and matching’ your outfit choices, like changing a top or adding a jumper or jacket, can give you a wider range of outfit change options. It’s always better to bring along more than less!
[H2] DO I NEED PROFESSIONAL make-up AND HAIR DOING?
If you’re someone who wears little or no make-up then that’s reflective of the true you and will be the you that turns up on that first date. Most of the people I work with do their own make-up if they wear it, however if you usually wear noticeable make-up and you’d like to have it done professionally then that works too. I can arrange a fantastic professional make up artist/ hair stylist for you if required.What’s most important is that you feel natural and like yourself in the photos.TIP: A little bit of tinted moisturiser or foundation can help even out skin tones and reduce shine in photos so do consider that. Don’t forget your nails - hands sometimes appear in shot. And having a blow dry the day before your session can help keep your hair looking lovely throughout your shoot - plus, a blow dry always makes you feel fabulous, doesn’t it? :)
[H2] SHOULD I BOOK PERSONAL GROOMING?
I’d recommend following your usual routine, or treating yourself to grooming if you’d value the experience! You’ll know your own skin so do make sure that you shave in time for any redness to disappear.

[H2] HELP!!! I’VE HAD AN OUTBREAK OF SPOTS!
Don’t worry!!! I can remove them! Part of my specialised service includes retouching or softening anything you are self-conscious about, especially things that are impermanent like skin conditions, spots, hives, rashes, red patches etc.
[H2] I WEAR GLASSES…
Clear glasses and glasses that minimise reflection are great.If you wear transition lenses/ light-sensitive glasses, that darken in bright light, please bring a clear non-transition pair for your session. Transition glasses go dark in the light and your eyes will not be visible. Eye contact is particularly important for dating photos and wearing transition lenses may impact your success.If you wear both contacts and glasses and would like shots with and without frames then consider shooting in contacts first and switching to glasses during the shoot.
[H2] do you work with different skin tones?
I do. I’m not always able to show all of my shoots in my dating portfolio for privacy reasons but if you head over to my professional portraits and personal branding website you can see a wider variety of people I’ve photographed.
[H2] can i bring a friend for support?
I don’t recommend it. It’s important for me to build a good connection with you so that shines out of the photos and connects with potential dates. Having a friend along can be distracting and minimise connection.

[H1] VIRTUAL/ REMOTE SMARTPHONE PHOTOSHOOTS

[H2] wHAT the heck IS A VIRTUAL SHOOT?
I know, right!! The magic of technology! Virtual shoots take place at your location. During the shoot your photos are captured using your camera phone, but here's the exciting part, they'll all be taken by me, from my location! These shoots use your smartphone camera with me directing the shoot and pushing the shutter button. This allows you to relax and get into your session without having to run back and forth to your phone to check shots or to keep adjusting pose/ outfit/ smile etc, which creates more natural, more engaging, and more connected photographs.
[H2] HOW DO THEY WORK?
The sessions are very much like my 'on-location' dating shoots - friendly and informal. I'll chat throughout and give you light direction to ensure that you're looking your best on camera and to help you to relax and get into your session. I'll be keeping a close eye on each shot including location/ backdrop, light, outfit adjustments, your smile, angles and 'pose' etc , creating a professional feel to your smartphone photos to give you a set of photos that look natural, attractive, and will connect with potential dates.During your session I'll ask you to adjust your phone camera into different positions to get the best angle and light for each 'set-up' before I take your photos.
[H2] BEFORE YOUR SHOOT…
Before your shoot I'll ask you to download an app to your phone. During our session the app allows us to connect and I'll be able to control your camera settings, including taking your photos. * During your session I will have access to your camera only and nowhere else in your phone. Once the session is finished we'll both log out and I'll no longer have access to your phone camera.
[H2] DO I NEED SPECIAL EQUIPMENT?
Nope! Just an up-to-date smartphone, the app (which is free to download), a strong consistent wifi connection, a bright window, and a couple of tidy /uncluttered spaces in your home.

[H2] DO I NEED A TRIPOD?
If you have one, great. If not, I'll tell you how you can set up a very simple way to keep your phone steady that works really well.
[H2] FINDING LOCATIONS…
When choosing your locations bear in mind that smartphone cameras function at their best in bright light so the better the light the better the look of the photos. At the start of our video call I'll ask you to walk me through your home so I can see the best areas for shooting your portraits.
[H2] WHAT WILL THE PHOTOS LOOK LIKE?
The images from the session will be the same quality/ image resolution as your smartphone camera. Smartphones are slightly slower whilst shooting due to the way the technology works so I’ll direct you into a light informal ‘pose’ to begin each set up. I'll chat with you as we go, and as I take photos, to achieve as candid a look as possible. The more relaxed and at ease you feel, the more candid the photos will look. My aim is to work with you to help you feel as relaxed and at ease as possible to create natural-looking, engaging dating photos. Your images will be shot on your camera’s wide-angled lens with any sharpening software that your smartphone applies. As such your photos will have the feel of your smartphone photos but will look very different to selfies.

Yes :) Before your virtual smartphone shoot I’ll send over some examples from recent remote shoot clients for you to see how photos from your session might look.
