With the uCheck platform, it’s simple to submit DBS checks for as many candidates as you need. Here’s how the process works:
Login to your uCheck dashboard: From here, you’ll be able to see the status of any existing applications, and start new ones.
Submit a new application: Choose the check you’d like to complete – you can either send this application directly to your candidate, or complete it on their behalf if you have the correct information.
Complete the application: If you’re completing the application on someone’s behalf, fill in all the relevant details across six sections:

Submit and track: After you submit your check, you’ll be able to track it through its five stages:
Stage 1: DBS receives the application
Stage 2: Applicant’s details are searched on the Police National Computer

Who needs a DBS check?
DBS checks are available for almost any job role – but the level of DBS check depends on the role itself.
Roles involving a fair level of trust or responsibility, such as accountants, veterinarians, solicitors, or locksmiths, require a Standard DBS check.
Anyone working in regulated activity (i.e. frequently around children or vulnerable adults) must, by law, have an Enhanced DBS check – often with an additional check of the Adults’ and Children’s Barred Lists.
Any other roles could be eligible for a Basic DBS check at the discretion of the employer.

How much does it cost to register with uCheck?
Registration is just £49.00 plus VAT. This is a one-off cost – after you’ve registered, you’ll pay for online DBS Checks as and when you need them.

Can a candidate start work before receiving a DBS check?
If an applicant will be working in regulated activity with children or vulnerable adults, you must wait for their DBS check to be returned before officially offering them employment. It is against the law to employ someone into a role with regulated activity if they are listed on the Adults’ or Children’s Barred Lists.
Employers providing care services for adults can make use of a service called DBS Adult First if they wish the applicant to start working sooner, under supervision. This check can only be completed if the applicant is in a regulated activity with vulnerable adults.
Within a few days, this will indicate whether an applicant can start work in a supervised position or whether the employer should wait for the full results of the Enhanced DBS check.

What’s included in an online DBS check?
At uCheck, we act as a DBS service provider. This means, rather than go directly through the Disclosure and Barring Service, you submit your DBS checks through our systems, and we expedite the process.

Should employees pay for DBS checks?
There is no law stating that employers should pay for employees’ DBS checks.
It is at the discretion of the employer whether they cover the cost, or require the employee to pay for their DBS check

What are ‘protected’ cautions and convictions?
Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, certain cautions and convictions become ‘protected’ or ‘spent’ after a certain period of time has passed. This means they no longer need to be disclosed on most job applications, including those requiring a DBS check.
Whether a caution or conviction is protected depends on the type of offence, the sentence received, and the age of the person at the time of the offence. Some serious offences are never protected and will always be disclosed on a DBS certificate.

How do I apply for DBS check online?

Can you speed up or fast-track DBS checks?

A DBS check for individuals (previously known as a “CRB check”) is background checks which shows any unspent convictions or conditional cautions, as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.​
Individuals aged 16 or over who live in, or are planning to live and work in, England or Wales can apply for a Basic DBS check to verify their current criminal record status.

There are several reasons why you might need an Individual DBS Check (formerly known as a CRB check), including:
Employment – Some employers require a Basic DBS Check as part of their recruitment process.
Visa applications – Certain countries may request a DBS Check as part of their visa and immigration requirements.
Personal alcohol licence – If you’re applying for a personal licence to sell alcohol, a Basic DBS Check is required.
Volunteering – Organisations may ask for a DBS check for voluntary work, especially if it involves working with the public.
Self-employment – A Basic DBS check can serve as proof of good character and background when working with clients. Since January 2026, eligible self‑employed workers can now also apply for Enhanced DBS checks – find out more here

It’s easy to apply for an online Individual Check with our simple online system. Step one is where you provide your personal data. You will need to input your address history for the past 5 years, personal information and payment details.
Step two is getting your ID verified. You will need to show your ID to someone who isn’t a partner or relative of yourself.

Individual CRB checks no longer exist and the DBS check system offers more comprehensive checks, including additional features like barring lists and a service to keep employers updated. And individual DBS check refers to a Basic DBS check that can be requested by the individual themselves. ​​

To complete an application, you’ll need to check:

Photographs and dates of birth are consistent across documents
Any visas are still in date and haven’t expired
If there are work restrictions, e.g. restrictions on the hours students can work per week
The documents are genuine and haven’t been tampered with
Any discrepancies in name are accounted for
All relevant dates are cross-referenced or verified by the appropriate embassies

Who needs a Right to Work check?
You should never make assumptions about a person’s eligibility to work in the UK or their immigration status. As an employer, it’s your responsibility to carry out checks on all prospective employees.

How long do Digital Right to Work checks take?
With Digital Right to Work checks, employers send an application link to their candidates. Candidates then photograph their documents and take a selfie to confirm their identity. Employers will then receive the results.
The process can be as fast as 2 minutes if the applicant completes the process as soon as it appears. However, it can take longer if the applicant waits to complete the process.

What's the difference between Digital ID verification and Digital Right to Work?
Digital Identity Verification allows applicants to digitally prove their identity by sharing ID documents using our sister-service, TrustID.
Digital Right to Work checks use Digital ID verification to prove their Right to Work in the UK.
Both services can only be used in conjunction with uCheck’s DBS checking service.

What documents can I accept?
For Digital Right to Work checks, you can accept:
Biometric UK or Irish passports
Biometric Irish passport cards
For manual Right to Work checks, the Home Office provides two lists of documents (list A and list B) that employers can accept as a person’s proof of right to work in the UK. You must only accept documents on these lists – no other documents are acceptable as proof.List A is made of documents that can be accepted for a person with a permanent right to work – for example,
A current or expired UK or Irish passport or Irish passport card,
A UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, or Irish birth or adoption certificate, or
A current Immigration Status Document from the Home Office (to name a few)
List B is made of documents that can be accepted for a person with a temporary right to work. This could be:
A current Immigration Status Document (with Home Office-issued photograph) with valid endorsement that the holder may stay and work in the UK
A Home Office document of a holder’s application for leave to enter or remain on/before 30 June 2021
A Home Office Application Registration Card and Positive Verification Notice

What will the results show?
With our Right to Work service, once the check has been carried out, the results will either show ‘Complete’ if the check was completed successfully and the documents verified, or ‘Error’ if:
The image you uploaded is blurry or unreadable
A signature is missing from the document
Some parts or sections are missing from the document
The document has been manipulated, and security checks must be conducted
If you encounter an error, you can easily re-check the applicant by re-uploading any images. However, if the result shows the document has been manipulated, the Platform won’t allow you to re-check, and you will need to seek help from the Home Office.
