[H1] Multi-trip Tickets

New Leap zonal fares for Dublin and surrounding Commuter Areas came into effect April 28th 2025. Features of the new fare structure include:
Four Leap fare zones for Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail services, which cover an approximate 50km radius from Dublin city centre.
New prepaid tickets are available for purchase using the TFI Leap Top-up App.
Most fares in Zone 1: TFI Dublin remain unchanged.
Bus Éireann fare changes are planned for June 2025.

Many TaxSaver tickets can now be loaded onto Adult Personalised TFI Leap Cards.  These include monthly and annual tickets for Transport for Ireland services (operated by Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland, Iarnród Éireann and Luas) as well as commercial operators like Ashbourne Connect, Collins Coaches, Matthews.ie, Swords Express and Wexford Bus. These tickets are ordered through your employer.

Can someone else use my personalised TFI Leap Card?

No; your personalised TFI Leap Card is unique to you. Only the person whose name & photo is printed on the card, can use it. If someone else uses your personalised TFI Leap Card, they may be fined & have the card confiscated.

How does the validator know whether to use the Travel Credit or Ticket on my card?

Validators are programmed to check if your card has a valid ticket for the applicable service first. If there is a valid ticket on the card, it simply validates and no Travel Credit is deducted. If there is no valid ticket for the service, the Validator will use Travel Credit instead.

What if I lose my TFI Leap Card that has a tax saver ticket loaded on it?

The replacement process currently varies depending on your ticket type. For more information on replacing a lost card, please visit TaxSaver TFI Leap Card.

Do I get tax benefits from using Travel Credit on my card?

No; tax savings are only applicable to the TaxSaver tickets you buy for your card through your employer.

How can I see if there are tickets for my TFI Leap Card awaiting collection?

Any TaxSaver ticket renewals, or tickets bought online but not yet loaded onto your TFI Leap Card, can be viewed from the Card Overview screen of your LeapCard.ie account.

How can I see if travel credit top-ups for my TFI Leap Card are awaiting collection?

Any travel credit top-ups that have not yet been collected & loaded onto your TFI Leap Card, can be viewed from the Card Overview screen of your LeapCard.ie account.

Do I still get the same tax benefits, when TaxSaver tickets are on a TFI Leap Card?

Yes, your ticket has simply been loaded onto a TFI Leap Card, so your tax benefits are unchanged.

Can I add Travel Credit to my TaxSaver TFI Leap Card?

Yes, your TaxSaver TFI Leap Card can be topped up with Travel Credit or Tickets, at over 2,000 shops nationwide, as well as at all Luas stops & DART/Commuter Rail stations. You may wish to do this if you want to travel on services where your TaxSaver ticket is not valid.

When can I load my new tax saver ticket onto my personalised TFI Leap Card?

It depends on when your employer processed your ticket order. Tickets can usually be loaded onto your card towards the end of the month for the next month/years travel. For example, a ticket that is valid for February would normally be ready to load at the end of January.

The Leap Top-Up app is available free for near field communication (NFC) enabled iphone 7 (and above) and Android phones. It allows you to instantly top-up your TFI Leap Card, check your balance and buy tickets.
New Leap zonal fares for Dublin and surrounding Commuter Areas came into effect April 28th 2025, which means you can now purchase a range of new tickets on iOS and Android, along with tracking your new mulitmodal capping.
To use the app, simply hold your TFI Leap Card to the back of your compatible smartphone to instantly check your balance, collect a pre-paid ticket, or top-up your TFI Leap Card – anytime, anywhere.

Important Update: Phone Number Required for Payments
To enhance your payment security, our payment gateway provider requires users to enter their phone number when topping up a Leap Card. This measure is part of compliance with the EU Payment Services Directive (PSD2) for “Strong Customer Authentication,” designed to protect your bank card from fraud.
NTA does not store or access your phone number during the payment process, this information is mandatory for the NTA’s payment services provider in verifying your identity as the rightful cardholder. We appreciate your understanding as we work together to ensure a safe and secure payment experience.

How do I check my balance or see what tickets are on a TFI Leap Card?

On Android, ensure you have NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled on your device. This can be found within the settings menu of your device.
Open the Leap Top-Up app & hold your TFI Leap Card against the back of your device. Your balance and/or ticket type information will be displayed.
On iPhone you will need to open the scanner in order for the app to read your card.

I topped-up my TFI Leap Card with the app but I didn't get the travel credit

The TFI Leap Card needs to be make contact with a load location, in this case the app on the phone, for the top-up to be added. Try scanning the card again in case the credit is waiting to be collected. If this doesn’t solve the issue, it means there was a connectivity issue during the transaction and the app didn’t receive the approval from your bank to take the money. As the app doesn’t know it’s ok to proceed with the transaction and claim the money, the funds will be reversed back into your account by the bank within 3-5 working days

How do I use the App to top-up a TFI Leap Card?

Select “Add credit” from the home screen. Alternatively choose ‘add travel credit from the menu on the left-hand side
Slide the dial to the desired value or tap the screen to enter the top-up amount
Select “Top-Up”
Complete the payment process using a a saved or new debit/credit card
Hold the TFI Leap Card against the back of the device to instantly add the top-up amount to the Card

How do I use the tickets feature on the app?

Select “Add ticket” from the home screen or from the menu on the left-hand side
Choose a location
Select ticket option
Select your chosen ticket by tapping ‘buy’
Complete the payment using a saved or new debit/credit card
Hold the TFI Leap Card against the back of the device to instantly add the ticket to the Card

You can check your ticket information in your transaction history by selecting the ticket. Otherwise, you can tap the menu button on left hand side and choose ‘view ticket information’. Active tickets will be in blue; Expired tickets will be in grey.

Why doesn’t the App work on my phone?

The Leap Top-up app is only available on NFC-enabled Android phones and iPhone 7 and above
Users of some devices may experience issues / inconsistent behaviour while using the app on their NFC device. This is a device issue rather than an app issue and may be caused by a number of factors including: the device being rooted, firmware updates, android updates, or incompatible/un-supported batteries being used with the device.
You might want to try the following to help diagnose and resolve the problem:
Ensure that your TFI Leap Card is not damaged or cracked.
Ensure the back cover of the device is attached correctly.
Ensure that a cover or protective case is not obstructing the device from reading the card.
Turn NFC off. Wait a few moments and then turn it back on again before presenting a TFI Leap Card.
Turn off the device, remove the battery & check that it’s fitted correctly. Turn the device back on & present a TFI Leap Card again
Try presenting another NFC-enabled card to the device (such as a contactless bank card) – does the device recognise that a card has been presented?
Try uninstalling & re-installing the app.

Which Leap Top-Up App should I download?

We are currently aware of a few unofficial apps on the Apple Store, which are not affiliated with TFI or TFI Leap Card. The official Leap Top-Up app is free and does not ask for any user details (username nor password) and will require you to scan your TFI Leap Card (so it can provide your latest balance and transaction history).

Can I use the App to buy TaxSaver tickets?

No, these must be purchased through your employer. But if you have ordered an annual or monthly TaxSaver Bus ticket, you can use the App to load it onto your TFI Leap Card a few days before the end of the month. Once the ticket has been ordered and is ready for collection simply:
Ensure the App is downloaded and NFC is turned on;
Hold your card against the back of your phone; and
If the new ticket loaded successfully, you should see it in your list of available tickets.

Can I collect tickets? Which types?

All ticket types that are available to buy on our website can be collected through the app.
Monthly and annual TaxSaver bus tickets can also be collected using the app.

What happens if I forget my passcode?

You are given 3 attempts to enter your correct passcode, then the stored payment details will be deleted and you will need to save your payment details again.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Your TFI Leap Card balance is held on the TFI Leap Card and your phone is pin protected. Your payment details are stored in payzone and require you to enter your passcode to complete a transaction. If a passcode is entered incorrectly three times, the stored payment information is automatically deleted.

Can I save my payment card details so I don't have to fill them in every time?

Yes you can save your payment card before proceeding to top-up, you will be prompted to create a passcode to keep your payment card information secure.

How do I top-up using a saved payment card?

If your payment card is saved to your TFI Leap Card you will only need to enter your passcode to purchase a top-up when prompted.

Can I make a one-off payment with a different payment card?

Yes you can, when topping up a prompt with the option to make a one-off payment with a different payment card will appear.

How do I replace a saved payment card?

Select the option to “Pay with a different card” and follow the steps to overwrite your existing payment information.

Can I delete a saved payment card?

Yes, select the option to “Delete this payment card” and follow the steps to overwrite your existing payment information.

Can I view my ticket balance?

The app shows the ticket name of all tickets on your card but not the ticket balance.
In future releases, we will introduce functionality to allow you to view more ticket details such as coupons available/used.

Can I top-up multiple TFI Leap Cards other than my own?

Yes, the App can top-up any TFI Leap Card.

Children aged 5 to 8 can now travel free on Transport for Ireland (TFI) services with a Child (5-8) TFI Leap Card.

How do I apply?

You can apply for a Child (5-8) TFI Leap Card online here. Just follow the steps on screen.
Please note: you will need to use a valid email address when applying for a card.

What documents do I need to apply?

You’ll need to upload:
The parent or guardian’s passport, driving licence, learner permit, or National ID card
The child’s birth certificate or passport

I do not have a birth certificate or a passport for my child. Can I still apply?

No, either a birth certificate or a passport is required for application.

Can I apply for more than one card at a time?

No, each application must be submitted separately.

Can a parent apply for cards for multiple children?

Yes, but each child’s application must be completed online individually. If applying for more than one child please allow time for processing of a card before attempting to apply for a second and subsequent cards.  You will receive an email confirming when your first application is processed. Processing usually takes 2 days.

How long will it take to receive the card?

Cards are usually delivered within 10 working days.

Do I need to register the card to my online Leap account?

Registration is possible but isn’t necessary. If the card is lost, you need to reapply.

Where can my child use the card?

The card is valid on all Transport for Ireland (TFI) services within the Republic of Ireland, including buses, trains, and trams. This includes:
Dublin City Bus services (Operated by Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland)
Bus Éireann bus services nationwide (Excluding Expressway and the School Transport Scheme)
All Luas and Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail services
All TFI Local Link bus services
Kilkenny Town bus services KK1, KK2 operated by City Direct

Can the card be used on commercial (non-TFI) services?

No, commercial services are not included in this scheme.

Can my child use the card on Expressway services operated by Bus Éireann?

No, Expressway is a commercial service and not covered by the scheme.

What TFI Leap Card does my child need to travel on commercial bus services?

Your child can use a Child (5-15) TFI Leap Card on eligible commercial bus services. This will allow your child to travel on these services on a discounted child fare.

How should my child validate the card before boarding?

They must Tap On bus, train and Luas services using the validator before boarding and Tap Off Luas and train services after their trip.

How does my child travel on intercity trains without tap-on/tap-off validators?

When using train stations without validators, your child should travel with the card as their ticket and show it to a member of staff, if requested.

What if my child forgets to tap on or off?

To travel free, your child must tap on and off for train and tram services and tap on for bus services. If they don’t, the card may not be valid for that journey.

Can I add credit to the Child (5-8) TFI Leap Card?

No, this card is for free travel only and cannot hold credit. For paid travel on commercial services, use a Child (5-15) TFI Leap Card.

My child has a Child (5–15) TFI Leap Card and is under 9. Can they travel free with this card?

No, the Child (5-15) card offers discounted fares but not free travel. To travel free, your child must use a valid Child (5-8) TFI Leap Card.

Yes, children must be accompanied by a responsible person with a valid ticket.

Can children travel alone?

Generally, children aged 5–8 should be accompanied by a responsible person with a valid ticket. However, some operators allow unaccompanied travel under specific conditions. Please check the Conditions of Carriage of the relevant operator for full details.

What happens when my child turns 9?

The Child (5–8) TFI Leap Card expires at the end of the month of your child’s 9th birthday. After that, they can use a Child (5–15) TFI Leap Card for a discounted child fare.

You’ll need to apply for a new card. Once you do, the old card will be blocked and can’t be used

No, this initiative is separate and applies only to scheduled TFI public transport services.

No need! Children under 5 already travel free and don’t require a TFI Leap Card.

Yes, to avail of free travel, children aged 5–8 must hold a valid Child (5–8) TFI Leap Card.

Why does the parent/guardian have to verify their identity?

We ask a parent/guardian for ID verification for the following purposes:
Safeguarding and Child Protection
To validate the identity of the parent/guardian applying for the Under 9 Free Travel Card on behalf of the child.
This helps prevent unauthorised access to or use of sensitive information in relation to the child.
Data Protection Compliance
Under laws like the GDPR, organisations must ensure that personal data is only shared with individuals who have the legal right to access it and data is only processed when an organisation is entitled to do so. Thus, requesting an ID ensures that a responsible adult has submitted the information for the NTA to process.
Having the under 9’s free travel card  eliminates a need for a child to carry ID when using public transport or providing such ID to bus operators (especially if the age of the child is not evident).
Preventing Fraud or Misrepresentation
As this expands the free travel program, verifying identity helps prevent fraudulent use of the free travel card.

[H1] TFI 90 Minute Fare

The TFI 90-minute fare (TFI 90) applies to most journeys in Zone 1, whether you are using multiple services within 90 minutes or taking a single trip. TFI 90 applies to the following services:
Dublin City Bus operated by Go-Ahead Ireland and Dublin Bus (Except Express services which cost €2.40);
Luas; and
DART and Commuter Rail within Zone 1.
You can continue travelling within Zone 1 for free if you travel by train from Zones 2, 3 or 4 and tap-on again in Zone 1 within 90 minutes of your first tap-on.
To get the TFI 90-minute fare, simply use your Leap Card as normal within 90 minutes. You must tap-on every time you board a service to demonstrate you hold a valid ticket for each journey:
Tap On before each bus journey; and
Tap On before and Tap Off after each train and tram journey.
As long as you tap-on your last service within 90 minutes of your first, you will qualify for the TFI 90-Minute Fare. You can check how much of your 90 minutes remain on the Leap Top-Up App.

Does Zone 1 capping and the TFI 90-minute fare apply even if my Dublin City Bus service (operated by Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland) crosses from Zone 1 into Zone 2?

Yes, Zone 1 daily and weekly capping and the TFI 90-minute fare apply to all Dublin City Bus services operated by Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland (Except Express services which cost €2.40), including the entirety of routes 33, 33a, 33x, 65, 65a, L1, L2, L3, X1 and X2 despite them crossing into Zone 2 geographically.

Do I have to pay for each journey with the TFI 90-Minute Fare?

The TFI 90-Minute Fare is deducted at the start of your journey, the second and subsequent journeys are free as long as you tap-on using your Leap card within 90 minutes of the first journey.

What will happen if I forget to tap-on before boarding a Luas after a bus journey?

To avail of the TFI 90-Minute Fare, you must always tap-on your Leap card at a validator on the platform before boarding a Luas and tap-off when alighting a Luas. This will ensure you have a valid ticket for your journey and you won’t be at risk of receiving a Luas Standard Fare Notice for €100. It will also ensure you get the best value for your journey.
