[H2] Most frequently asked questions Here are some questions and answers to get you started on your Tap & Go journey. What is Tap & Go? Tap & Go is a smart ticketing system designed to simplify your travel on the Merseyrail network. Using either a MetroCard, contactless bank card you tap in and tap out at stations, removing the need for paper or pre-paid tickets. Based on your taps the best value fare is automatically calculated. This means faster, easier journeys with no need to queue. For MetroCards, journeys are charged to the credit or debit card linked to your Tap & Go account. For contactless bank cards and smart devices, journeys are charged to the linked bank account. What are the benefits of Tap & Go? Convenience: No need to queue for tickets. Flexibility: Pay as you go, with no need to plan ahead. Eco-Friendly: Reduces the use of paper tickets. Cost-Effective: Benefit from automatic daily and weekly fare caps where applicable. How does Tap & Go work? At the start of your journey: Tap your card or device on a platform validator or a station gate. Platform validators are located close to entrances to all non-gated Merseyrail stations. At the end of your journey: Tap out on the platform validator or station gate to complete your trip. Always remember to tap out, or you will be charged for a maximum single journey. Always use the same card or device to tap in and tap out for your journey. If you start your journey with your bank card, finish it with that same card. If you start with your phone, finish with your phone. Even if your phone and card use the same bank account, the system treats them as different, so mixing them will lead to higher charges. The system calculates the correct fare for your journeys and deducts it automatically the day after travel. The Tap & Go system operates using a weekly cap. If you exceed the price of a weekly Merseyrail Only Railpass for the area you have travelled in, you will not be charged for any further travel that Monday – Sunday week. You do not need to register to use Tap & Go with a contactless bank card or smart device, unless you need to add a missing tap or contact Customer Relations about your fares. To use Tap & Go on MetroCard, register your MetroCard for a Tap & Go account and your link payment card at https://www.metro-smart.org.uk/. If you don’t have a MetroCard, they can be purchased for £1 from any staffed Merseyrail ticket office. Is Tap & Go safe and secure? Yes. Tap & Go uses encrypted technology to protect your data and payments and has passed required assessments. For MetroCard users, no personal data is included in your taps, only the unique number on your MetroCard. For contactless bank/credit card or smart device users, you card details are securely encrypted before being sent as tap data, this is in accordance with current data protection regulations and PCI compliance. All personal information provided when registering for an account on the MetroSmart website is stored securely and complies with current data protection regulations. Can I use Tap & Go on all train routes? Tap & Go using a MetroCard is available to use for journeys that are wholly on Merseyrail’s Northern and Wirral lines. Tap & Go cannot be used on the City line, as these services are run by Northern Rail, not Merseyrail. The above also applies to Tap & Go using bank cards and smart devices, with the exception of Chester station. Chester station ticket gates currently do not accept bank card taps. Tap & Go on MetroCard can be used at Chester. There are platform validators on the Merseyrail platform but you only need to tap on one with your MetroCard if you haven’t or aren’t going to tap on the Chester station ticket gates. If your journey starts on the Merseyrail network but ends at another train operator’s station you will need to tap in at your start station and then tap out at the Merseyrail interchange station on a platform validator before you board a non-Merseyrail train. You must have a pre-paid ticket valid for the remainder of your journey. Alternatively, tickets for your complete journey can still be purchased from Merseyrail ticket offices. Can children use Tap & Go? Yes, but only by using a MetroCard. Tap & Go journeys using contactless bank cards or smart devices will be charged adult fares because it is not possible to know the age of the passenger from the tap. For MetroCard Tap & Go users the fare charged is based on your journeys and your date of birth. If you are aged 5-15 you will be charged child fares. If you are aged 16-18 and travel off-peak, you will never pay more than a Young Person’s Day Saver, and your weekly cap will be based on a Young Person’s Merseyrail Only Railpass. Everyone travelling will need their own Tap & Go registered MetroCard. Multiple MetroCards can be added to one Metro Smart account. When you login to Metro Smart you have the option to add additional MetroCards and to register them for Tap & Go. This allows adults to set up Tap & Go for a child and assign their own credit or debit card to pay for any journeys the child makes. When registering for any extra Tap & Go MetroCards you’ll need to enter the date of birth of the person who will be using the card. When checking a MetroCard for travel information, inspectors can see if the card has been registered to a child or a 16-18 Tap & Go account and they may be asked to provide proof of age. More information on the forms of ID accepted can be found here. Tap & Go journeys using contactless bank cards or smart devices will be charged adult fares. What types of bank cards and devices can I use? You can use Visa, Mastercard, or Amex bank cards for Tap & Go. If you prefer, you can also use your phone or smartwatch, as long as your bank card has been added to the digital wallet on that device.Important: Always use the same card or device to tap in and tap out for your journey. For example, if you tap in with your plastic card, you must tap out with the same plastic card. If you tap in with your phone, you must tap out with the same phone.Even if your phone and plastic card are linked to the same account, the system sees them as different cards, so it cannot match your taps. Using different cards or devices can result in higher charges because your journey may be counted as incomplete. When can I start travelling using Tap & Go? Using a MetroCard – Once you’ve registered for a Tap & Go account and received a confirmation email that your account has been created, you will need to wait 2 hours before travelling. You must make your first tap within 30 days of registering your MetroCard to activate your account. Using a bank card or smart device – You do not need to register prior to travel, you can Tap & Go straight away. Where do I tap in and tap out? You tap in or out of your journey using a platform validator or a station gate. After tapping successfully on a platform validator, the screen will turn green and display a message showing that your tap was successful. After tapping successfully on a station gate, the gate will open, and you can pass through. At the end of your journey, tap the same card again to tap out before you leave the station. Some stations have both station gates and platform validators. If you have tapped on a station gate, it will log that part of your journey. You do not need to tap on a platform validator at the same station. How can I avoid a card clash when using contactless payments? To prevent a card clash at the station gate or platform validator, it’s best to remove your contactless card from your wallet or purse before tapping. If you tap your wallet to the station gate or platform validator the system may take a tap from the wrong card. How can I view my journey history? MetroCard users can view journey history by logging into your MetroSmart account at https://www.metro-smart.org.uk/ and going to the “Merseyrail Tap & Go” tab. From here, you can see the last 7 days of journey and transaction history, or click the “View Journey History” button to see up to 28 days of journey history.Passengers using Tap & Go using a contactless bank card or smart devices can use the guest login on the Metro Smart website to view 7 days journey and fare history. To see more journey history or to add a missing tap you can register an account on the Metro Smart website. Where can I get more help or support? Contact our customer services team at https://help.merseyrail.org/ Please remember that if you are using Tap & Go with a bank card or smart device, the Customer Relations team will only be able to answer queries about your journeys or fares if you have created an account by registering on the MetroSmart website. What are Tap & Go prices and how do the daily and weekly caps work? Tap & Go fares are charged at the same rate as those available at Merseyrail ticket offices, with the added benefit that you don’t need to queue, work out the best value ticket, or pre plan how many journeys you’re going to make, Tap & Go does it for you.For example, if you travel outside of the morning peak (06:31 – 09:29, Monday – Friday) you will never pay more than the price of a Day Saver. If the amount you have been charged for daily journeys reaches the price of a weekly Merseyrail Only Railpass for the area you have travelled in, you won’t be charged for any more journeys you make that week. Tap & Go weeks run Monday – Sunday and weekly cap calculations reset on Mondays.Monthly and annual season tickets are still available to purchase from Merseyrail ticket offices. What should I do if my card doesn’t work? If your card isn’t working at the gate or platform validator, try again or use another payment method. There are multiple platform validators at each station. If you’re having trouble contact Merseyrail with the details and purchase a ticket from the ticket

Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.
Based on 449 businesses audited.
Merseyrail has 32.2 points less BS than the average for Logistics, Transport & Shipping.
Logistics, Transport & Shipping BS: Merseyrail (merseyrail.org)
This is a benchmark for low-BS utility websites. It prioritizes functional data (fares, maps, times) and local relevance over generic transport marketing, providing users with immediate substance and verifiable technical details.
To further lower the score, replace the vague H1 ‘Your fast track to Spring’ with a functional description like ‘Real-time Liverpool City Region Rail Updates’. Implement Organization and Service schema to formally link the brand to its regional authority markers in the metadata. Maintain the current news update frequency as it provides excellent temporal proof of active operations.
The site represents a regional passenger rail operator. While the provided industry dictionary focuses on freight logistics and supply chain management, Merseyrail occupies the passenger transport sector, providing high-density functional information consistent with transport utility requirements.
“The score of 13 is driven by minimal information density loss (one fluff H1) and a slight penalty for the absence of structured schema data in the crawl. The site excels in providing specific, dated, and localized evidence that serves the user rather than the marketer.”
