Home Journal Book Cover Design Millennial Cringe: Pete Adlington on Designing the Cover for I Want You to Be Happy [H2] Millennial Cringe: Pete Adlington on Designing the Cover for I Want You to Be Happy By Pete Adlington 19 May 2026 5 minute read Read Faber’s Art Director on the design process for Jem Calder’s funny, excruciating novel, I Want You to Be Happy. Save article Share [H5] I Want You to Be Happy was a book that made me check over my shoulder to see if Jem Calder was following me and noting down my tragic life choices. For someone like myself, a privileged, narcissistic and flawed millennial man working in the creative industry in London, this book had a lot to relate to. Often with a cringing wince. It’s a real slice of a time and place, one which will soon be gone and replaced by the trends and anxieties of following generations. But for me and others of my age cohort it’s a snow globe of exactly how it was and how it felt to start being an adult. The beauty of the book is that it isn’t vacuously playing millennial buzzword bingo without any further depth. It’s a tender and quite tragic examination of how the ubiquitous feelings of love, failure, anxiety, doom and small hard-won joys play out in a certain generation. You may be younger or older but you’ll still recognise Chuck and Joey, you’ll know their feelings, you just might not have, or be willing to spend, £14 on smashed avo on sourdough. [IMG: Design routes for I Want You to Be Happy] [H6] I wanted the cover to be honest and have a wry sense of knowing, using the pathetic trappings of the millennial experience to juxtapose the title. Often with books you will need to research period and characters, landscape or aesthetics before you start work, but this title felt so close to home that I sat alone at my kitchen table of a night and just began to work. Phones, coffee, cigarettes are mainstay concrete imagery in the book and featured in the first round, but somehow I felt like the imagery wasn’t doing enough. In the brief there had been a list of possible imagery and the big click came when, rather than trying to illustrate, I just started typing out all the things I could think of that could feature on the jacket. It was somewhat cathartic, amusing and depressing to list the things that were woven into the tapestry of a typical London-centric millennial life. I looked at the list and thought, why not just have this on the cover . . . Turning this list into a jacket was very swift. Credit to Jem for the title which allowed me to bury such a surface-level set of items under a more emotional message. The cover tries to say, ‘life is cluttered but all that matters is you’ . . . but still there’s something you don’t trust in the sentiment. Maybe that’s just my take, though. [IMG: Design routes for I Want You to Be Happy] [H6] Unusually, we were looking to publish the book in a different format from the usual hardback. For the first print run we are producing a jacketed paperback, which meant that I had a whole paperback cover under the jacket to use for design. After some discussion we decided to go totally against the front cover and have a rich pattern which visualised the stark list from the front. It would be subtle on first glance but offer a rich explosion when the jacket was removed. Look closer into the pattern and you will see the generational piece of merch crucial to any self-respecting London liberal elite: a Faber tote bag. Link in description. [H6] I Want You to Be Happy by Jem Calder is published in paperback, audio and ebook on 21 May 2026. Follow the Faber Design Team on Instagram. He’s in his mid-thirties; she’s twelve years younger. He’s long abandoned his ambition of becoming a novelist and now works as a copywriter at a big ad agency. ‘Lead copywriter,’ he corrects himself. Joey lives paycheck to paycheck on her barista wages and privately dreams of making it as a poet. They go back to Chuck’s luxury flat – a world away from Joey’s cramped house-share, the crumbs in her bed. Soon, Joey’s imagining a future between them, and Chuck’s moving on from a major change in his recent past. Amazing, how meeting a new person can make you feel so new. Your Diagnosis
Before revealing the machine’s verdict, predict the BS score for each signal. Higher = more BS (more fluff, less verifiable substance). Drag each slider, then submit to compare your judgment against the engine.
Stuck? Reveal the heuristic lens — how the deterministic page-auditor reads each signal (no AI, pure pattern rules)
These are the structural rules a local, deterministic auditor applies — the same lens you can use to judge each signal. They describe what to look for, not this company’s result.
Classify each sentence as substantive or hollow. Grounding markers — numbers, currencies, dates, technical units, named entities — outweigh marketing adjectives. When fluff sits right next to hard evidence, the fluff is forgiven.
Pull the main entities out of the H1, then check whether they actually recur through the body. A page that announces one thing and then talks about another drifts. Headings with no real sentences underneath read as pseudo-substance.
Count trust words (review, testimonial, rating, verified) against real outbound proof links (Google, Trustpilot, Clutch, G2, Yelp). Lots of trust language with zero verification links is trust theatre. Unlinked logo galleries count against it.
Look at how much sentence length varies. Natural writing varies its rhythm; templated or mass-produced copy is statistically uniform. Very low variation reads as commodity content — unless unique named entities break the pattern.
Inspect the JSON-LD. Is there an Organization or Person schema, and does it carry sameAs links to real external profiles (LinkedIn, socials)? Missing schema or no identity declaration signals an anonymous entity.
Want to apply this lens yourself? The free BS Indicator Chrome extension runs these heuristic checks live on any page. Bear in mind it is a single-page, deterministic tool — it relies only on pattern rules for the page in front of it and does not perform the cross-page semantic correlation this audit uses, so its readout is a starting lens, not the full verdict.

Media, News & Publishing BS: Faber & Faber (faber.co.uk)
Faber is the rare example of a business that doesn’t need to lie because its history is its marketing. It provides high-substance, archival-quality content that treats the reader as an intelligent participant rather than a conversion target.
1. Replace the anonymous ‘What Members Say’ quotes with verified links to a third-party review engine to eliminate the trust theatre penalty. 2. Explicitly link the Nobel Laureate names in the body text to their official prize citations to maximize proof paths. 3. Diversify the meta-descriptions on sub-pages to move away from the repetitive ‘All the information you need’ boilerplate. 4. Add sameAs schema properties for all featured authors on the homepage to strengthen the authority graph.
While the industry dictionary focuses on journalism, the brand is a perfect fit for the Publishing category, demonstrating high standards in editorial independence and source verification through its curated lists and Academy. Its digital presence functions as a multimedia storytelling hub, aligning with modern Media and Publishing expectations.
“The low score of 12 is driven by an near-total absence of marketing fluff and a heavy reliance on historical and literary facts. Minor points were only awarded for generic template language in account sections and the use of unlinked testimonials. The site serves as a benchmark for high-substance publishing.”
